Universal Capture (UC) will prompt you to log in, if not previously authenticated, using the same EchoVideo login process you are used to. If your institution uses Single Sign-On (SSO) authentication and you log into an institution/university portal to access EchoVideo, Universal Capture will walk you through the login process via your default browser, and you will see an institution login page similar to the one you typically log into.
IMPORTANT: If you access EchoVideo through a learning management system (LMS) such as Canvas or Blackboard or Moodle, you must establish a direct login to EchoVideo to publish Universal Capture recordings. See Creating or Changing Your EchoVideo Password.
Depending on your Institution settings and how you access Universal Capture, you will encounter one of the following workflows:
- Simplified Sign In turned OFF - UC: Personal and UC: Classroom desktop applications.
- Simplified Sign In turned ON - UC: Personal and UC: Classroom desktop applications.
- Browser Sign In - UC: Device and UC: Online.
If you belong to multiple Institutions and need to switch between them, see the information on how to logout and Change your Institution below.
NOTE that using the “Alternate login” link on the main EchoVideo login page does not log you into Universal Capture, it only logs you into the main EchoVideo web application.
Log in with Simplified Sign In turned OFF
This is the default workflow.
- Launch Universal Capture.
- If not already authenticated, you will be prompted to log in at which point your default browser will launch to guide you through the login process.
- Enter the requested username/email and password if requested, and click SUBMIT.
If your institution uses SSO to authorize you, you will see an institution login page, similar to the one you typically log into.
Otherwise, you will see the EchoVideo login page.
When logging into UC: Classroom with the EchoVideo login page, you do not have to separately enter your email address, but the initial focus is on the password field instead of the email address field.
- You are then redirected back to Universal Capture to create or control a capture.
After logging in, the browser tab with the redirect notice will remain open.

- You can then use Universal Capture to create or control a capture.

To change your Institution
Both Universal Capture: Online and Universal Capture: Device are tied to your Institution when logging into/out of the main EchoVideo web application. However, if you belong to multiple institutions it only logs you in for the institution you selected during login. For example, if you logged into Institution A and then changed your Institution to Institution B, you would get a warning when attempting to access UC in Institution B.
- Logout of the main EchoVideo web application.
- Log back into EchoVideo, selecting the Institution where you would like to access Universal Capture.
Universal Capture: Classroom (the desktop application) is tied to your Institution during the installation process.
- Uninstall the current version of Universal Capture: Classroom.
- Re-install Universal Capture: Classroom using the Institution ID of the desired Institution.
Universal Capture: Personal is tied to your Institution during the initial login process rather than during installation. Once a user logs in initially and selects their Institution, Personal mode remains tied to that Institution until those settings are cleared and any currently logged in user logs out.
- Launch Universal Capture.
- Click into the Universal Capture menu:
- EchoVideo Capture on a Mac.
- Help on a Windows machine.
- Click Clear Institution Settings.
- Logout (if necessary).
- Log in using credentials from the desired Institution.
To log out
Logging out of Universal Capture does not log you out of the main EchoVideo web application.
- Launch Universal Capture.
- Click your name to bring up your user details.
- Click LOGOUT.
