EchoVideo supports integration with Epiphan Pearl capture devices, allowing institutions to use Epiphan hardware as fully supported capture devices within the EchoVideo platform. This integration gives your organization the flexibility to choose capture hardware that best meets your needs while retaining full access to EchoVideo's scheduling, recording, monitoring, and media management capabilities.
The integration works through the Echo360 CMS app, which runs as an isolated container on the Epiphan device. This containerized approach enhances security by keeping the app separate from the rest of the Epiphan environment, and allows Echo360 to deliver security patches and updates independently - without waiting for an Epiphan firmware release. The app serves as the bridge between the Epiphan hardware and the EchoVideo platform, handling all of the communication between the two.
Supported Devices
The following Epiphan Pearl devices are supported for use with EchoVideo:
| Device | Maximum Recommended Epiphan Channels | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pearl-2 | 6 | Full-sized appliance with the most input flexibility. Supports HDMI and SDI inputs. |
| Pearl Mini | 3 | Compact appliance suitable for smaller rooms or portable deployments. |
| Pearl Nexus | 3 | Mid-range appliance for multi-source capture environments. |
Firmware requirement: Epiphan firmware version 4.24.5 or later is required for all devices.
Channels and Profiles
Epiphan Channels
Epiphan Pearl devices offer extensive channel configuration options through their Admin panel. Each device channel can be configured with custom layouts that combine multiple physical video inputs into a single output - for example, compositing a camera feed and a screen capture into one picture-in-picture channel. You can also apply custom overlays, crop and scale sources, and switch between layout presets. For full details on channel and layout configuration, see the Epiphan User Guides linked above.
EchoVideo Input Channels
On the EchoVideo side, the platform pulls the configured channels from the Epiphan device - it works with whatever you have set up on the device. Each EchoVideo input channel maps to one of the device's configured channels via a Recording Profile and a single profile supports up to 4 EchoVideo input channels.
The number of EchoVideo input channels available per capture depends on the QuadraVision setting for the room:
- QuadraVision OFF: Up to 2 EchoVideo input channels
- QuadraVision ON: Up to 4 EchoVideo input channels
Recording Profiles
Profiles are a core concept for the Epiphan device integration. They replace the simple input combination dropdown used with Echo360 appliances and give administrators significantly more control over how channels are mapped, what quality settings are used, and how VOD and live streaming are configured - independently if needed.
A room can be as simple as a single default profile that controls everything, or support up to 6 saved profiles for different scenarios, plus the option to create a custom profile on the fly for one-off captures.
For a full breakdown of profile settings, configuration, and how VOD and live streaming profiles work, see: Recording Profiles for Epiphan Devices
How Epiphan Devices Work in EchoVideo
Once registered, Epiphan devices behave exactly like Echo360 managed capture devices within the EchoVideo platform. The same workflows you use for room assignment, scheduling, monitoring, and media management all apply - there is no separate interface or process for Epiphan hardware.
Room Configuration
Devices are assigned to Rooms in EchoVideo, which represent the physical spaces where captures take place.
See: Epiphan Room Configuration
Scheduled Captures
Captures can be scheduled using the EchoVideo UI, CSV import, or the Scheduling API. Scheduled events sync to the Epiphan device automatically and start at the designated time.
See: Creating Captures and Capture Schedules
Ad Hoc Captures
Administrators and Instructors (if enabled) can initiate unscheduled recordings on demand, either in EchoVideo via the Create button or (where supported) the device's physical front panel. Ad hoc captures support the same profile selection as scheduled events.
See: Ad Hoc Captures
Live Streaming
Live events can be scheduled alongside VOD captures, with the option to use separate quality profiles for the live stream and the on-demand recording.
Monitoring and Alerts
Real-time device monitoring is available via the Rooms tab, including online/offline heartbeat (reported every 30 seconds), live thumbnail previews during active captures, and automatic alerts for Device Offline and Missed Capture events.
Upload and Processing
After a capture completes, the Epiphan container automatically uploads recorded files to EchoVideo for processing. Multi-channel recordings are uploaded and processed with synchronized audio and video, with built-in retry logic for network interruptions and outages during scheduled captures.
How to Get Started
You Need
- A supported Epiphan device (Pearl-2, Pearl Nexus, or Pearl Mini) running firmware 4.24.5 or later.
- EchoVideo administrator access.
- Network access between the device and EchoVideo cloud endpoints for registration, scheduling, status reporting, and file upload.
Setup Overview
Getting an Epiphan device up and running in EchoVideo is a two-step process:
Registration: Generate a device key in EchoVideo, install the Echo360 CMS app container on the Epiphan device, and link the two using the provided credentials. Once registered, assign the device to a Room.
Configuration: In the Epiphan Admin panel, set up the device's physical inputs and create desired Epiphan channels. Then in EchoVideo, assign the device to a Room, map the Epiphan channels to EchoVideo input channels, and create additional Profiles as needed.
Once the device shows as online, you are ready to record.
