Instructors have always had the ability to generate an ad hoc capture for a class, using a variety of methods available to them.
EchoVideo now provides a New Device Capture option in the Create menu, located in the main menu bar. It allows instructors to generate an ad hoc capture using the managed capture device installed in a classroom.
If you enable the New Device Capture option for instructors, you can then select whether or not to have those captures automatically sent for closed captioning. Enable or disable the Caption all ad hoc captures toggle. If enabled, any captures generated via the New Device Capture option will be automatically sent through your configured captioning provider for closed captioning. Ad hoc captures generated via any other method are not affected by this toggle, and are not automatically sent for captioning.
The New Device Capture option enabled/disabled by this feature toggle allows instructors to select the room, duration, and publish location for the ad hoc capture they are generating. It also has an option for streaming the capture live, if the publish location is to a course (as opposed to the user's library). Once the capture is generated, instructors will receive a confirmation message that the capture was sent to the device. If enabled, a Check Capture button will also appear, allowing instructors to directly launch the Universal Capture: Online interface to monitor and control their recording.
This option is not designed as a launch-method for Universal Capture: Personal. Use the New Local Capture option in the Create button menu to launch a local installation of Universal Capture.
To allow instructors to generate ad hoc captures from the Create button
- Log into EchoVideo as an administrator.
- Click the Settings icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.
- From the Settings menu, select Institution Settings.
General settings appears and Basic Info is selected by default.
- Click Roles and Permissions then select Instructor.
- Enable the Enable Instructor to start ad hoc captures toggle.
- As appropriate, enable or disable the Caption all ad hoc captures toggle. If enabled, all captures generated via the New Device Capture option will be automatically sent through your captioning provider for captioning.
Note that other methods of generating ad hoc captures are not affected by this toggle and are not automatically captioned.
- Click Confirm on the confirmation message that appears for either toggle change.
Instructors will now see a New Device Capture option in the Create button menu.
The main toggle only adds/removes the New Device Capture button from the Instructor's UI. It does not limit the ability of instructors to generate ad hoc captures using other methods.
In addition, the Caption ad hoc captures toggle ONLY applies to captures generated via the New Device Capture option; it does not affect other ad hoc capture methods, which are not automatically captioned.
