macOS 15 (Sequoia) Considerations
- We have fully tested Universal Capture against the latest Apple release and have discovered an issue that we are actively working on where capturing System Audio may not work properly.
- Please also note that as of this release, screen recording permissions are now required to be reviewed and set monthly.
Universal Capture (UC) Software (UC: Classroom and UC: Personal) allows you to capture your local System Audio for recordings. This means that Universal Capture can capture up to two different audio feeds (one input for System Audio plus the Audio channel). When the capture is processed, all enabled audio feeds are merged and synced to generate the audio for the capture playback. This allows you to play media on your computer during a recording and have any audio from that media captured as well.
As of macOS 14 (Sonoma), Apple Silicon-based Macs require the installation of the Rosetta audio driver in order for the application to record system audio. If this driver is not already installed on your Mac, you will be prompted to install it prior to installing Universal Capture.
For information about configuring UC: Classroom to capture System Audio, see Configure Universal Capture: Classroom Input Devices.
When capturing system audio, keep in mind that if you have your sound set to play through your speakers AND you also are capturing from a microphone that can pick up the speaker sound, this may result in a recording that has an echo (the audio from the System Audio selection as well as the audio from the Microphone). In order to avoid this, you can either:
-- Let the audio play through your speakers and allow your microphone to capture it. In this case, do not select a Display with System Audio as an option.
-- Set your audio output on your computer to a pair of headphones (or an alternate audio source that can't be picked up by the mic). In this case, you should select a Display with System Audio as an option.
Mac Users:
-- Do NOT change your system audio output (where you are hearing audio) during a recording. This will cause Universal Capture to lose System Audio for the rest of the capture.
-- If you are using Universal Capture to record a meeting that is happening in Zoom, Teams, or other web conferencing software AND you are capturing System Audio in UC, ensure that your conferencing software audio / speaker output is set to either be the same as your system or set to EchoVideo System Audio.
To also capture System Audio
- Launch Universal Capture.
- Log in (if not already authenticated).
- Select the main Audio channel input (microphone) you would like to capture.
- Open a Video / Display input selection drop-down and select a Display option that includes "with System Audio".

Multiple Displays? Once you have selected a Display with System Audio for a channel (left or right input selection), the other channel will not show System Audio options for additional Displays. This is because System Audio can only be selected once.
To only capture System Audio
- Launch Universal Capture.
- Log in (if not already authenticated).
- Select Mute as the main Audio channel input.
Mute means that we are not capturing an available audio source as the main Audio channel within Universal Capture. Your microphone can still be used within other applications (Zoom, Teams, etc.).
You have to select Mute every time you start a recording. This is the only input selection that is not retained between recordings.
