This page describes working with the short answer question polling form itself. If you need help getting to this form, see Creating a Poll or Editing Polls as necessary.
Short answer polls include question text and a text box into which students type freeform answers. Student responses are limited to 60K (60000) characters or less.
You can provide feedback for the poll, which appears after the student submits their response in interactive media or after you close the presentation's polling slide. This is discussed at the bottom of this page.
The Short Answer poll is simple, with only a Question field to complete. Click into the Question field and type (or edit) the question you want to ask. You can enter up to 1000 characters.
If you add or edit a short answer poll in the interactive media editor, Time placement is also required. It is pre-populated with either the current location of the existing poll (if editing) or the current location of the media playback (for creating a new poll, as shown below).
Click the Time placement field to change the location for the poll in the media. The timestamp you enter must:
- Be in hh:mm:ss format.
- Be a valid location within the duration of the media.
- Not be within the intro or outro clip segment (the part added by the institution at the front or the back of the video, if there is one).
- Not be at the same location as another poll in the media.
Do not worry; the poll will not let you save it if the time placement does not meet the criteria and will show you an error indicating what you must change.
At this point, you can enter feedback for students as described below or simply click Done to save the poll.
Provide Feedback for Responses
Click the Feedback chevron to expand the dialog box and display the General Feedback text field, as shown in the figure below.
You can use this space to give the answer you were looking for, as short answer polls do not have a correct answer option or other feedback as appropriate. You can enter up to 1000 characters.
All feedback is optional.
The feedback text you enter automatically appears for students in interactive media polls after they submit their responses. Presentation polls only show feedback after the instructor closes the poll and shows the correct answer (show solution). The student must also have submitted a response to see the feedback.
The image at the bottom of this page identifies the buttons for closing the poll and showing the correct answer on polling slides.
Preview and Save the Poll
While you are editing the poll, you can stop at any time to preview your work by clicking the Preview button located in the bottom left corner of the poll form.
The Preview shows the question text and the text box for student answers. It does not show the Feedback entry. The figure below shows a Short Answer poll.
If you are happy with the poll, click Close Preview, and then click Done to save your work.
From the poll editor, both the Close Preview and Edit Poll buttons do the same thing. They return you to the poll editor. If you preview a poll from the interactive media editor, Close Preview closes the preview and returns you to the interactive media editor. Edit Poll takes you to the poll editor described on this page.
What Students See
Below is an image of what the above short answer poll looks like to students in interactive media.
Once the student submits an answer, text from the Feedback, if provided, is displayed for the student, as shown in the figure below.
Below is an image of what the above short answer poll, when placed in a presentation, would look like to a student in a classroom.
The Feedback text does not appear for the student until the poll is closed to further responses. The student must also have submitted an answer before the poll was closed to see the Feedback text.
The close poll button for instructors is identified in the figure below. Since short answer polls do not allow a correct answer, the show solution checkmark icon is grayed out.
