Before creating a piece of interactive media, we recommend you review the Embedded Polling and Interactive Media - Overview article to get an idea of tips and limitations for creating, editing, and using embedded polling. You may also want to refer to Polls and Polling Questions - Overview. Those articles are designed to ensure you understand these two types of media at your disposal.
When you first add a poll to a video or audio file, you actually create a copy of the file, then add the poll to the copy. This creates a new, wholly separate form of media called interactive media.
This means that to add a poll to media, you select Add A Poll as shown in the figure below.
If you have the Copy permission in a Collection, you will also see the Add a Poll command, which, as stated above, creates a copy of the media and allows you to add one or more polls to it. Note, however, that when adding a poll from within a Collection, the new piece of interactive media resides in your Library and not in the Collection until you add it to the Collection.
Once you add a poll to media, you have an interactive piece of media. You can edit the interactive media to add more polls, change the locations, or remove existing polls.
Any poll(s) you add to the media gate require students to respond to the embedded question before they can continue viewing at the poll locations.
To embed a poll into a video / audio file
- Find the media you want to embed polls in, then click the tile to open the media details page.
-
From the left menu, select Polls, as shown in the figure below.
-
In the Interactive Media editor that appears, click Play or use your arrow keys to move through the media, or drag and drop the playhead to the location where you want to place the first polling question.
The playhead does not have to be at the exact location; you can edit the timestamp once the poll is added.
- Click Pause if necessary to pause playback.
- Scroll down to the bottom section of the page.
-
From the Library Polls tab, use the Filters and Search box to find an existing library poll you want to add to this media. Alternatively, you can select Create A Poll to create a new poll to use. Library polls can be filtered by Poll Type and sorted by Date Created, Name, and Owner.
You can edit the polling question details after you add it to the media.
- Click on the poll you want to embed. A preview of the poll opens in a pop-up window,
- Use the scroll bar on the right or the arrow button to see the lower section of the polling question if necessary.
-
If this is the poll you want to add to the media, select Add Poll, also identified in the figure below.
When the interactive media editor appears and the poll is displayed in the viewer, the poll location is indicated on the playback bar. The bottom section of the page displays the Library Polls tab, which lets you add another poll as needed.
-
Click Play again and use your arrow keys or drag the playhead to a new location, and repeat the above steps to embed another poll.
You cannot place two questions at the same location; they must be offset by at least one second. If you attempt to add another poll without moving the playhead first, you will get an error.
- To make changes to the polls once they have been added, click the Embedded Polls tab to show a list of all the polls residing in this media.
- Click the vertical action menu of the polling question you want to edit. The options on the tab update to provide editing capabilities. See also Editing Polling Questions in Interactive Media.
- View - Moves the playhead to the selected poll.
- Edit - Opens the poll editor to adjust the time placement, question details, and answer choice(s). Remember that changing the polling question after it is embedded does not change the original poll used to add it.
- Preview - Opens a preview window of the poll.
-
Remove - Removes this polling question from the media.
- When you are finished adding polling questions to the media, click Save.
- Click Library from the top menu to return to your library.
Once created, you can edit your interactive media. Editing interactive media involves adding, editing, and removing polls embedded in media.
