You add images to your project using patterns available from the Add Pattern sidebar located on the right side of the Habitat interface.
Habitat saves uploaded images to the project’s Media Library so you can reuse them on other pages.
Understand Images in Habitat
Storage: Habitat stores images with the specific project, not for all projects in your organization. If you want to reuse image files in another project, you must re-upload them to that project.
If you need to reuse many images across multiple projects, contact your EchoInk representative. They can recommend service providers who can help you with this task.
Resolution: Images in the Habitat authoring environment are downsampled to reduce page load times in the editor. The images display at their correct resolution when viewed in the exported content.
Size: In Habitat, you can automatically resize your images to ensure they look great at any screen size or resolution, without setting static size values in the HTML files. See Resize an image for the provided sizing options. If you would like additional template options for specific or custom image sizes, contact your Inkling
representative.
Choose an Image Format
Inkling is compatible with JPG, PNG, and GIF; however, it is important to know which of these file types is best for building your Inkdoc.
JPG: JPG is a lossy compressed file format. This makes it useful for storing photographs at a manageable file size. The compression makes .jpg a common and useful format for storing photographs and realistic images.
PNG: PNG is a lossless compression format, making it a good choice for storing logos, graphics, illustrations, and images with text.
GIF: Just like PNG files, a GIF is also lossless; it is limited to 256 colors. Of these image formats, only .gif files support animation.
Add and Crop an Image
Drag an image pattern from the Add Pattern sidebar to your page.
You will see the Edit Image window, which provides two ways to include an image. You can choose a new image from your desktop or select a stored image from the media library.
- Select Click to Upload Image.
- Choose an image and click Open.
- Confirm that the preview shows the image that you want to add.
Optionally, crop the image.
The Crop button appears after you add a new image or choose a stored image.
Note the following:
- Specify None and adjust the image borders to crop it, or, optionally, use the dropdown menu to specify an aspect ratio.
- To resize the cropped area, select a corner or side and drag.
- The cursor changes to a move icon to show you can reposition the cropped area.
- Habitat saves the original image in the media library. You can click Add cropped copy of image to library to also store the cropped image version for use elsewhere in your project.
Optionally, add alternative text for the image on the preview screen, as shown in the image below.
Alternative text conveys essential information about an image. Screen readers and other assistive technologies use this text to help users with visual and cognitive disabilities understand web content.
- Click Done.
Reuse an Image From the Library
To re-use an image stored in the project’s Media Library on another page:
- Drag an image pattern to the page.
Select Choose from Library.
The Media Library shows all images uploaded for the project.
- Select an image.
- Confirm that the preview shows the desired image, then click Done.
