Images are a key part of building engaging content in Habitat. Properly managing and optimizing them ensures strong performance, faster load times, and a better learner experience.
Add and Crop an Image
You add images using patterns from the Add Pattern sidebar on the right side of the Habitat interface.
When you upload an image, Habitat saves it to the project’s Media Library, allowing you to reuse it across pages within the same project.
Drag an image pattern from the Add Pattern sidebar to your page.
You will see the Edit Image window, which provides two ways to include an image. You can choose a new image from your desktop or select a stored image from the media library.
- Select Click to Upload Image.
- Choose an image and click Open.
- Confirm that the preview shows the image that you want to add.
Optionally, crop the image.
The Crop button appears after you add a new image or choose a stored image.
Note the following:
- Specify None and adjust the image borders to crop it, or, optionally, use the dropdown menu to specify an aspect ratio.
- To resize the cropped area, select a corner or side and drag.
- The cursor changes to a move icon, indicating you can reposition the cropped area.
- Habitat saves the original image in the media library. You can click Add cropped copy of image to library to also store the cropped image version for use elsewhere in your project.
Optionally, add alternative text for the image on the preview screen, as shown in the image below.
Alternative text conveys essential information about an image. Screen readers and other assistive technologies use this text to help users with visual and cognitive disabilities understand web content.
- Click Done.
Reuse an Image From the Library
To re-use an image stored in the project’s Media Library on another page:
- Drag an image pattern to the page.
Select Choose from Library.
The Media Library shows all images uploaded for the project.
- Select an image.
- Confirm that the preview shows the desired image, then click Done.

Click the image you want to replace.
A blue box appears around the image.
- Click Edit to access the Edit Image modal and perform any of the following actions:

- Use the Upload Image or Choose From Library functions to replace the image entirely.
