Chapters are like bookmarks that learners can use to quickly navigate to points in a recording and are a great way to provide context to the content in your media. EchoVideo provides the ability to auto-generate chapters on any video with audio or any audio-only media assets stored in EchoVideo.
Chaptering is currently in closed Beta. Reach out to your institution Admin team if you would like to have the feature enabled.
The auto-generated chapters are created by a Machine Learning (ML) engine that recognizes topics, flow, and structure of your media. Whether your media is a lecture, webinar, or an informational asset, the engine will try to effectively partition the media based on the context and changes of context, to generate the titles and ranges of time for each topic.
The only requirement to getting auto-generated chapters on your media assets is to have audio.
Toggling Chapters On
Once you have identified a media asset that you want to add chapters to:
Navigate to EchoVideo.
Find the media asset in your Library.
Click on the asset to open the Video Details page. On the Video Details you will find Chapters in the actions toolbar.
Click on the Chapters tool. A popup will open where you can toggle on and off the auto-generated chapters.
Once you toggle on the Auto-generated Chapters, the ML engine will start processing the media assets.
NOTE: If this is not the first time running the ML, it will take about 30% of the total length of the media asset. For example, if your media asset is 60 minutes, the process will take approximately 15-20 minutes. You can close the popup and come back at a later time to get the generated chapters.
Navigating through Chapters
Once the chapters have been generated, you will observe two new things on the EchoPlayer:
The timeline is segmented by chapters. You may hover one of the segments to see the title of that specific chapter.
There is a new button on the player, shown in the image below. By clicking on this button a list of all of the generated chapters are display and you can navigate through the whole media asset.
Note: Once you toggle on chapters in your media asset, the EchoPlayer will show the Chapters navigation components everywhere the media asset is embedded or displayed for all users. If you don't want to show this on the player, please toggle off chapters using the toggle in the Chapters popup.
Other Notes and Considerations
If you make an edit to your video, the timing on the chapters will not be updated automatically. You must click on the Regenerate link.
Currently, you are not able to edit chapters. Our Chapters Editor will arrive in 2023.
This feature is in Beta. You may find some functionality is not perfect. Please share any feedback you have using the link on the Chapters popup.
