This page describes working with the numerical question polling form itself. If you need help on how to get to this form, see Creating a Poll or Editing Polls as necessary.

Numerical polls include question text and the ability to specify a single correct value or a range of correct values. Students who respond must respond with the correct answer or a value that falls within the range for the response to be "correct".

The response fields accept both positive and negative integers and decimals, as well as "e" to indicate exponent values (10e7 for example).

You can also request students justify their response. The text box for the justification entry appears after the student submits their selected response.

Required Fields

The main section at the top of the image poll contains a Question field and two Answer boxes labeled From and To, as shown in the below figure. Question text and Answer or Answer Range are required for all image polls.

If you are adding or editing an image poll in the interactive media editor, Time placement is also required but is pre-populated with either the current location of the existing poll (if editing) or the current location of the media playback (for creating a new poll, as shown below).

Click into the Question field and type (or edit) the question you want to ask. Then select whether the Answer Type is Exact Number or Number Range. Exact Number is selected by default.

The first figure below shows a Numerical poll with a Number Range answer. If you select Number Range, you must complete both answer boxes with the start and end numbers for the range.

If you select Exact Number, you receive a single answer box into which you must enter a correct answer, as shown in the below figure.

Note that if the poll requires a justification, students will not be able to respond using SMS / Text. The SMS response feature is only available for polling slides (in a presentation).

The Time placement field only appears if you open the poll while editing interactive media. The field is pre-populated with either the current location of playback (for creating) OR with the current location of the poll in the interactive media (for editing).

Click the Time placement field to change the location for the poll in the media. The timestamp you enter must:

• Be in hh:mm:ss format; if you enter only mm:ss, the hh will automatically be 00
• Be a valid location within the duration of the media
• NOT be within the intro or outro clip segment (the part added by the institution at the front or the back of the video, if there is one)
• NOT be at the same location as another poll in the media.

Don't worry; the poll won't let you save it if the time placement doesn't meet the criteria, and it will show you an error indicating what you have to change.

Require justification means that when a student responds, they will receive a text box where they can enter freeform text to justify or explain their submission. This is OPTIONAL.

If you are looking for specific follow-up information from the student, be sure to clearly state that in the Question text.

At this point, you can enter feedback for students as described below, or you can simply click DONE to save the poll.

Providing Feedback for Responses

Click the Feedback chevron to expand the dialog box and display the Feedback text fields available, as shown in the below figure.

Numerical Polls contain Correct answer and Incorrect answer feedback boxes. The student sees feedback based on whether their submitted response was correct or not.

Enter text in one or both feedback boxes to provide students with additional information or guidance surrounding the question (and their answer). You can enter up to 1000 characters in each field.

ALL FEEDBACK IS OPTIONAL.

Interactive media polls display feedback for students after the student submits their response.

Presentation polls will display feedback AFTER the instructor closes the poll and shows the correct answer (if there is one). The buttons for doing so on polling slides are identified in the image at the bottom of this page. Note that only students who have responded to the poll will see feedback.

Previewing and Saving the poll

While you are making additions or edits to the poll, you can stop to preview what you are doing at any time by clicking the Preview button, located in the bottom left corner of the poll form.

The Preview shows the question text and the correct answer. It does not show the Feedback entries. The figure below shows a completed numeric poll with a Range Answer.

If you are happy with the poll, click Close Preview, and then if necessary click Done to save your work.

Note that from the poll editor, both the Close Preview and Edit Poll buttons do the same thing; return you to the poll editor. If you are previewing a poll from the interactive media editor, Close Preview closes the preview and returns you to the interactive media editor. Edit Poll takes you to the poll editor, described on this page.

What students see

Below is an image of what the above numeric poll looks like to students in a piece of interactive media.

After the student submits their answer, text from the appropriate Feedback fields is displayed, as shown in the below figure.

Below is an image of what the above numeric poll placed into a presentation looks like to a student in a classroom.

The Feedback text does NOT show up for the student until the poll is closed to further responses and the correct answer is shown for students. The student must also have submitted an answer before the poll was closed in order to see the Feedback text.
