A Note on Terminology: Since the editor is primarily designed for video editing, this article uses the term video to refer to the media being edited. However, some of the information and procedures also apply to audio-only files. It does not apply to interactive media (videos with embedded polls). You cannot currently edit the video portion of interactive media; you can only add, remove, or edit embedded polls. As such, the Edit Media command for interactive media is disabled.
Each recording in the EchoVideo system has three possible channels, two video and one audio. This is designed to allow recordings to include video from one or two cameras, or a video and a computer screen recording, along with the sound that accompanies either or both.
Note: When QuadraVision is enabled for your institution, recordings can include up to 5 channels: 4 video and 1 audio. This allows recordings to include multiple cameras, computer displays, document cameras, or other supported video sources, along with the accompanying audio.
The EchoVideo video editor now allows you to add, remove, or replace any of those channels for any recording in your Library (for which you have editing permissions).
The figure below is a composite image showing where the commands for the Add a Channel, Replace Channel, and Remove Channel options described on this page reside.
As with all media editor functionality, we encourage you to practice and play around with these features to get an idea of what they do and how to use them. Remember: you can always use Save As to save your changes in a new file, and the Undo button and / or Revert to Original to undo any changes you make.
The one stipulation that applies to performing any of these tasks is that at least one channel from the original media must remain. You cannot replace or remove all of the original parts.
For example, for a single video / audio recording, you can remove and / or replace either the video or the audio but not both. If you add a second video channel, you can also replace the original audio with the audio from the newly added channel (if it has audio), but at that point the original Video 1 channel must remain and cannot be removed or replaced. You can edit the video channel to clip and remove segments, reducing what is there, but you cannot remove the entirety of the original.
All of the procedures below begin in the EchoVideo Video Editor. If necessary, see Accessing the Video Editor. You may also want to review the other sections in Using the EchoVideo Video Media Editor for information about the editor's basic controls.
Add a Video or Audio Channel
Adding a channel is exactly what it sounds like: you add a video or audio channel to the media. This differs from Insert Media in that you add the entire layer rather than just insert a segment into an existing channel.
To use this command, an open channel must be available. If you are working with a dual-video capture that has audio, all three channels are occupied, and this command is grayed out. You must remove one or two of the existing channels to add a different channel to this media.
Adding a channel can be performed on single-video media with audio, audio-only, or video-only (no audio).
When adding a video channel from your library to an existing video, you will be given the option to also replace the audio of the original with the audio of the new file. Remember, however, that as noted above, at least one channel of the original media must remain; in this instance, it is the Video 1 channel. By adding a Video 2 channel and replacing the audio, the Video 1 channel is the only original channel left.
Finally, you can add media channels with different durations to the original. The player simply provides a placeholder for the duration where one channel has playable media and the other does not.
To add a channel
- In the editor, click Actions, then select Add A Channel, as shown in the figure above.
- If both audio and video can be added to this media (two open tracks), select the track type you are adding, either audio or video, then click Next. Otherwise, move on to the next step.
-
From the Select Media list, find and select the media containing the channel(s) you want to add, then click Next.
If you selected to add an audio channel, the list includes both video and audio-only media from your library. For adding a video channel, only video media appears in the list.
- Depending on your previous choices, one of the following dialog boxes will appear, requesting you make and / or confirm your selections.
-
If you are adding an Audio channel, click Confirm to confirm your selection. Only the audio channel of the selected media is added to your original video. This is shown in the figure below. You can also click Back to return to the media selection list, or Cancel to exit out of the operation altogether.
-
If you are adding a Video channel and you selected a single-source video, select whether to also replace the original audio with the video's audio channel.
Replace existing audio replaces any existing audio channel (or no channel) on the original with the new one.
Discard audio adds the video channel to the original media, and playback uses the original audio. -
If you are adding a Video channel and you selected a dual-source video, select which video source to add and whether to replace the original audio with the audio from the source of the video you are adding.
TIP: Enabling the Video 1 and Video 2 radio buttons in the Channel Options dialog box, shown above, displays the thumbnails for each visual stream, to help determine which channel you want to add.
-
- Click Confirm. You can also click Back to return to the media selection list, or Cancel to exit the operation altogether.
- Review the playback in the editor and continue making edits as needed.
Remember, you have to click Save to save your changes to the original media, or Save As to create new media with these changes. You can also exit the editor; your changes are saved, but they are not applied to the original yet.
You can also undo / redo these changes as needed, Revert to Original, or continue to edit the media as you normally would.
Replace a Channel
Replacing a channel is exactly what it sounds like: you replace a video or audio channel for the media with one from another medium. This is different from adding a channel (discussed above) because the end result is the same number of channels you started with.
When adding a channel, you may be given the option to replace both the video and audio channels at the same time, but only if your original media is a dual-source recording. As with all media editor cases, you cannot remove all aspects of the original, meaning you cannot replace both the video and audio in media that has only a single video channel with audio.
Replacing a channel can be performed on any video or audio media.
Finally, you can replace a media channel with one of a different duration than the non-replaced channel. The player simply provides a placeholder for the duration where one channel has playable media and the other does not.
To replace a channel
-
In the editor, click the menu button (ellipsis) for the channel you want to replace, then select Replace Channel, as shown in the figure below.
-
From the Select Media list, find and select the media containing the channel(s) you want to use for replacement, then click Next.
If you selected to replace an audio channel, the list includes both video and audio-only media from your library. For replacing a video channel, only video media appears in the list.
- Depending on your previous choices, one of the following dialog boxes will appear, requesting you make and / or confirm your selections.
- If you are replacing the Audio channel, click Confirm to confirm your selection. The audio channel of the selected media replaces the original audio. This is shown in the figure below. You can also click Back to return to the media selection list, or Cancel to exit out of the operation altogether.
-
If you are replacing a Video channel in a dual-source video and you selected a single-source video, select whether to also replace the original audio with the audio channel of the video you selected for replacement. You do not get this option if you are working from a single-source video original.
Replace existing audio replaces any existing audio channel (or no channel) on the original with the new one.
Discard audio adds the video channel to the original media, and playback uses the original audio. -
If you are replacing a Video channel and you selected a dual-source video, select which video source to use. If your original is also dual-source, you can choose whether to replace the original audio with the audio channel from the media you are using for the video channel.
TIP: Enabling the Video 1 and Video 2 radio buttons in the Channel Options dialog box, shown above, displays the thumbnails for each visual stream so you can determine which Channel you want to add.
- If you are replacing the Audio channel, click Confirm to confirm your selection. The audio channel of the selected media replaces the original audio. This is shown in the figure below. You can also click Back to return to the media selection list, or Cancel to exit out of the operation altogether.
- Click Confirm. You can also click Back to return to the media selection list, or Cancel to exit out of the operation altogether.
- Review the playback in the editor and continue making edits as needed.
Remember, you have to click Save to save your changes to the original media, or Save As to create new media with these changes. You can also simply exit the editor; your changes are saved, but they are not applied to the original yet.
You can also undo / redo these changes as needed, Revert to Original, or continue to edit the media as you normally would.
Remove a Channel
Removing a channel is exactly what it sounds like; you are removing a video or an audio channel from the media.
As with all cases with the media editor, you cannot remove all aspects of the original; meaning you can remove two of the three channels in dual-source videos, or, for single-source videos, either the audio or the video channel. Even if you have replaced a channel, you must have at least one channel of the original remaining.
The figure below shows what happens when you cannot remove (or replace) the sole remaining channel of the original. In the example shown, the original media was a dual-source video. Video 2 channel was replaced with a different video, and the audio for the replacement was also used. This means that Video 1 of the original is the only remaining component, and therefore must remain with the media.
You can remove a channel from any video media; you cannot remove the channel from audio-only media.
To remove a channel
-
In the editor, click the menu button (ellipsis) for the channel you want to replace, then select Remove Channel, as shown in the figure below.
- In the warning box that appears, if you are sure you want to remove this channel, click Remove Channel.
The channel you selected to remove is removed from the media.
