This page describes working with the Multiple Choice question polling form itself. If you need help getting to this form, see Creating a Poll or Editing Polls as necessary.
Multiple Choice polls include question text and a list of possible answer choices. You can indicate which responses are correct or none if there is no correct answer. Multiple Choice polls can include an image, added by uploading an image file or entering a URL to an image from an Embedly supported site.
As with most polling questions, you can also request students justify their responses. Students enter the supplemental response into a freeform text box.
Required Fields
The main section at the top of the Multiple Choice poll contains a Question field and one or more Answer fields. Question text and at least one Answer are the only required portion of the form. The figure below shows a Multiple Choice poll with a question and four answer options provided.
If you are adding or editing an ordered list poll in the interactive media editor, Time placement is also required. It is pre-populated with either the current location of the existing poll (if editing) or the current location of the media playback (for creating a new poll, as shown below).
Enter the Question text, then click into the Answer field(s) to type in the selections the students will choose from. You can enter up to 1000 characters in each field.
Click + Answer to add another answer field to complete. Add as many as you need.
Click the Trash Can next to one of the answer fields to remove it.
You can add or remove answer fields to have as few or as many as you want, as long as you have at least one completed answer field.
Click the checkbox to the left of any correct answer entry. This is optional; a correct answer does not have to be indicated. You can also select multiple correct answers.
If you select multiple answers, you can use the option below the answer list to indicate whether all correct answers must be selected to receive full credit. This is discussed more in the next section.
At any point, you can click the Preview button in the bottom left of the form to see what the poll will look like when presented to students. The Preview also indicates which answers are correct (if any).
The Time placement field appears if you open the Multiple Choice poll while editing interactive media. The field is pre-populated with either the current location of playback (for creating) or the current location of the poll in the interactive media (for editing).
Click the Time placement field to change the location for the poll in the media. The timestamp you enter must:
- Be in hh:mm:ss format.
- Be a valid location within the duration of the media.
- Not be within the intro or outro clip segment (the part added by the institution at the front or the back of the video, if there is one).
- Not be at the same location as another poll in the media.
Do not worry; if the time placement does not meet the criteria, the poll will not let you save it and will show you an error indicating what to change.
You can enable response options, embed media, or provide feedback for students as described in the sections below, or you can click Done to save the poll.
Response Options
Below the list of answers are two options you can select for students responding to this poll.
Require all correct answers for full credit means that if you marked multiple answers as correct by enabling the checkbox next to them, students must select all of the correct answers to have their response marked as correct. While the option is always available, it has no effect if you select one or zero answers as correct.
If multiple answers are indicated as correct and you require all correct answers for full credit, any student who selects any correct answer but not all correct answers will be shown as having responded incorrectly to this poll.
Require justification means that when students respond, they will receive a text box in which they can enter freeform text to justify or explain their submission.
If you are looking for specific follow-up information from the student, clearly state that in the Question text. For example, using the Question provided in the figures on this page to request a justification, the Question text may read, "Who is the voice of the Abominable Snowman? Use the justification to identify other Pixar characters or movies this person has voiced for."
Students cannot respond using SMS / Text if the poll requires justification. The SMS response feature is only available for polling slides.
Embed Media in Multiple Choice Polls
Multiple Choice polls allow you to embed media directly into the polling question by uploading an image file or providing a URL for the media you want to embed. EchoVideo allows you to use public links for EchoVideo media and media links from any site that Embedly supports. EchoVideo automatically formats the media to fit into the top section of the poll.
Toggle the Embed media switch on to expand the poll form and access the Choose Image or Media URL options, as shown below.
Embed an Image
Click Choose Image to upload an image file from your local computer or a shared drive. Standard image file types are supported, such as .jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp, .svg, and .tif.
The Filestack dialog box provides shared drive location options on the left side, as shown below. Select the one you want, or click the plus icon in the center of the dialog box to upload from your local computer.
Once selected and uploaded, the image appears in the poll form and an Image Alt Text field, as shown in the figure below.
While the alt text field is optional, it is recommended. Enter brief but descriptive text to provide context about the uploaded image to non-sighted and low-sighted users. You can enter up to 500 characters.
For tips on how to best use alt-text, see https://webaim.org/techniques/alttext/.
Embed EchoVideo or Other Website Media
Use the Media URL text box to enter or paste the URL of the media you want to embed into the poll. As indicated above, you can use media from any site Embedly supports. You can embed images from those sites, videos, video clips, animated gifs, or any number of image/media types.
You can also generate a public link for EchoVideo media and paste that link into the URL box.
The figure below shows a pasted XKCD comic URL using the "link for embedding" provided on the site.
Unlike uploaded images, the embedded URL does not appear within the poll editor version of the form. To see what the embedded URL image will look like, click Preview from the bottom of the form. The link used in the above figure looks like the below figure when previewed.
When finished, click Close Preview.
Provide Feedback for Responses
Click the Feedback chevron to expand the dialog box and display the available Feedback text fields, as shown in the figure below.
Each answer option has a feedback text box. The text you provide for each box is shown to any student who selects and submits that answer. This allows you to provide students with immediate guidance and feedback (hence the name) based on their submitted responses.
There is also a General Feedback box. The text entered into this box appears for all respondents and can be used in addition to or instead of specific-answer feedback.
Enter response feedback into any or all of the feedback textboxes. You can enter up to 1000 characters in each field.
All feedback is optional.
Line breaks are not included when the feedback is shown to students. You can use them to enter text, but students will see your sentences as single, unbroken paragraphs. Use punctuation accordingly.
Interactive media polls display feedback for students after the student submits their responses.
Presentation polls will display feedback after the instructor closes the poll and shows the correct answer (if there is one). The buttons for doing so on polling slides are identified in the image at the bottom of this page. Only students who have responded to the poll will see feedback.
Preview and Save the Poll
While you are adding or editing the poll, you can stop to preview your work at any time by clicking the Preview button located in the bottom left corner of the poll form. The Preview button is not enabled until all required fields / selections on the poll form are completed.
The Poll Preview shows the question text, the answer options, and any embedded media you may have added. It also indicates which answer(s) have been marked as correct. It does not show the Feedback entries. The figure below shows a completed Multiple Choice poll with an embedded image.
If you are happy with the poll, click Close Preview, and then, if necessary, click Done to save your work.
From the poll editor, both the Close Preview and Edit Poll buttons do the same thing; they return you to the poll editor. If you preview a poll from the interactive media editor, Close Preview closes the preview and returns you to the interactive media editor. Edit Poll takes you to the poll editor described on this page.
What Students See
Below is an image of what the Multiple Choice poll looks like to students in interactive media.
Once the student selects an answer and submits it, text from the appropriate Feedback fields is displayed, as shown in the figure below.
Below is an image of what the Multiple Choice poll placed into a presentation looks like to a student in a classroom.
The Feedback text does not show up for the student until the poll is closed to further responses and the correct answer is shown for students. The student must also have submitted an answer before the poll was closed to see the Feedback text.
The close poll and show solution buttons for instructors are identified below.
