Universal Capture is a cross-platform application that turns a Mac or Windows PC into a capture device. Universal Capture software is available through the Downloads page in EchoVideo. The installation wizard guides you through installation. Once installed, Universal Capture will keep itself up to date by downloading and applying updates in the background.
If you have not already done so, see Universal Capture Specifications to ensure the computer you are using meets the minimum system requirements for Universal Capture.
Use Local Directories for Installation!
The Universal Capture installation and data directories must be on the local drive; they cannot be located on a network, remote (mapped), or USB thumb drive. Use the defaults provided during installation.
Download the Installer
The Universal Capture Download link downloads either a .dmg (disk image for Mac) or .msi (Microsoft installer for Windows) file. Installation involves finding the downloaded file and launching it. So be sure you know where your browser puts downloaded files.
- Enter EchoVideo, click the Settings menu to open it, and select Downloads, as shown in the figure below.
- From the Universal Capture: Personal section of the page, select the download link for the installer that corresponds with the type of computer you are installing it to. The installer file must be saved to your local machine; you cannot save and run it from a cloud or shared drive.
You have three choices:- Mac Download (Intel) - for Mac computers with an Intel processor.
- Mac Download (Apple Silicon) - for Mac computers that use an Apple processor (also called M1 Macs or similar).
- Windows Download - for any Windows computer running Windows 10 64-bit or higher.
If you are unsure which Mac installer you need, there is no need to worry. If you try to install the wrong one, you will get a message like the one shown below, telling you to download and use the other installer.
Installing Universal Capture on Mac
Universal Capture on the Mac does not allow custom installation directories, which may conflict with programs like Faronics Deep Freeze. Universal Capture must be installed in the default locations on the Mac hard drive.
To install Universal Capture on a Mac
- Locate the downloaded Universal Capture Installer .dmg file.
It should be located in Finder Downloads. - Double-click the .dmg file to mount the image and begin installation.
- Double-click the UniversalCapture.pkg in the new Finder window to launch the installer.
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation, including providing the Institution ID you obtained earlier. When prompted, allow access to inputs (use Microphone and / or Camera).
As of macOS 14 (Sonoma), Apple Silicon-based Macs require the installation of the Rosetta audio driver for the application to record system audio. If this driver still needs to be installed on your Mac, you will be prompted to install it before installing Universal Capture.
Accept System Certificate Trust Settings changes - You may receive a security message like the one shown below to allow changes to the system certificate trust settings. Authenticate yourself (using Touch ID or Password) and accept these changes. If you do not have the appropriate rights on the computer, contact your System Administrator. They may need to push the certificate remotely for institution users' computers.
Installing Universal Capture on Windows
If you choose to install Universal Capture to a custom directory, note the following requirements:
- The program directory and data directory must be different.
- The application cannot be installed at the root of any drive.
- The folder(s) chosen as the target installation directories must be empty or non-existent.
Also, as stated at the top of this page, the installation must be done on the computer's local drive. It cannot be installed on a remote, network-mapped, external USB, or non-local drive.
To install Universal Capture on a Windows PC
- Locate the downloaded Universal Capture Installer.msi file.
Unless you select otherwise, it should be located in the Downloads folder. - Double-click the Universal Capture Installer.msi to begin the installation process.
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
Uninstall the Program
You can uninstall Universal Capture from your computer by following the steps below.
Uninstall from macOS
Uninstalling Universal Capture is easy; however, sudo access may be needed, and all data is deleted when the program is removed.
To remove Universal Capture
- Close Universal Capture.
- Navigate to the Applications folder using your Dock or through a Finder window.
- Find EchoVideo Capture.
- Right-click on it and select Move to Trash
OR
Click and drag it to Trash on your Dock. - Use Touch ID or enter your password when prompted.
If you are uninstalling with the intention of reinstalling and are running into an "Oops, something went wrong" error message, use the below instructions to uninstall using the Terminal.
When reinstalling, make sure to allow access to inputs in macOS.
To remove Universal Capture using the uninstall script
- Close Universal Capture.
- Open Spotlight by clicking on the Magnifying Glass in the upper-right corner of the Menu bar or by pressing Command + Spacebar.
- Type Terminal and run the application.
- In the Terminal, run the following command to run the script:
sudo /Applications/Echo360\ Capture.app/Contents/Resources/uninstall.sh
- Enter your laptop password when prompted. For security reasons, you will not see your password being typed into the Terminal.
- Follow the rest of the uninstall prompts.
Manually Remove the Certificate
Sometimes, the uninstallation process for macOS does not remove the certificate from your machine. If you plan to re-install Universal Capture software, leave the certificate in place. Leaving it does no harm. However, if desired, you can use the following methods to remove the certificate manually.
The Terminal Window method is preferred, as it specifically targets the certificate hash. Using the Keychain Access method requires you to find the correct certificate in what may be a longer list of certificates.
Open a Terminal window and enter the following command:
security delete-certificate -Z 6640A82C46F7B7219107666DCA9BFF28A08284E6 /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
OR
Opchain Access by navigating to Applications Utilities Keychain Access.app, and delete the localhost certificate shown in the figure below.
It is probably not the only localhost certificate in the list; you are specifically looking for the one with an expiration of Oct 18, 2048, at 10:51:15 UTC. The figure below shows this in local time (EDT), so you may have to calculate UTC to be sure.
This will complete the removal of Universal Capture software from your Mac.
