Who can see this?
EchoVideo restricts access to media viewing data and polling responses to ONLY EchoVideo Instructors and Administrators. If your LMS / VLE role maps to an instructor or administrator in EchoVideo, you can access the media analytics page described here. Otherwise, you are taken to your EchoVideo library.
EchoVideo allows LMS / VLE administrators to configure an EchoVideo media analytics tool for their LMS courses. The tool should be available at the Course level in the LMS / VLE, and accessible to instructors and instructor-type users.
Clicking the tool opens what EchoVideo calls a "consolidated analytics" interface, which provides student viewing data for all media associated with the LMS course. This includes both media embedded in the LMS course and media in any EchoVideo course section linked to the LMS course.
If you need help finding the tool in your LMS / VLE, see the section at the bottom of this page for basic navigation, or contact your administrator.
Media Analytics - Views Page
The Views tab appears when you first open the consolidated analytics page. If you have viewed the analytics tab for the media details page to review student viewing data of media, this page will look somewhat familiar to you.
The Top Section of the page contains a bar graph showing relative view counts by date.
The Time Range shown on the page by default is 30 days, but you can use the dropdown list in the top-right corner to select a different range, including 7 days, 60 days, 90 days, or 12 months. Additionally, if there is no view data from the past 30 days, the drop down will automatically attempt to select the next time range that does have view data. NOTE that all of the data on the page is subject to the dropdown list, except the download; selecting different time frames changes both the graph and the media list below the graph but will not change what data is included in the download.
The Bottom Section of the page lists all of the media associated with the LMS / VLE course you entered that has any view data within the selected time range. This includes media you may have embedded into the LMS course and all video / audio / interactive media in any EchoVideo section this LMS course is linked to. Media not viewed or downloaded during the selected time range does not appear on the list.
Below the list you will find paging buttons, allowing you to scroll through the media list. Each page contains 25 media.
Media Views List
The media list on the Views page consists of audio, video, or interactive media only (no presentations). These media must have at least one view OR have been downloaded during the selected time range to appear on the list. Media listed may or may not have a duration shown if, for example, a user played for only a second or two or downloaded the media without viewing it first. You can click ON the media link to open a page with more granular details, as described in the next section.
By default, the media is listed in ascending order by creation date (oldest to newest).
Remember that the data shown for each media may change based on the time range selected if views or downloads were executed at times that fall within different ranges (i.e., past 7 days vs. 30 days).
The data shown for each media in the list includes the following:
- Unique Viewers - The number of different users who have viewed this media within the selected time range.
- Total Views - The total number of views executed by all users within the selected time range.
- Total View Time - The total media viewing time by all users for this media in the selected time range.
- Average View Time - The average media viewing time for this media during each view; calculated as total view time divided by total number of views.
- Average % Viewed - The average percentage of the individual media viewed across all users (regardless of the total view count).
- On-Demand Views - Number of times users viewed the processed video file (as opposed to a live stream).
- Live View Count - Number of times users clicked "view live stream" during the live stream (if applicable).
Detailed Media View Data
Each entry in the media list is an active link. Clicking on a link opens a page with more detailed information for the selected media. Specifically, the page shows all user viewing details for all users who have viewed or interacted with the media at any time.
The data on the media view details page is NOT subject to the time range on the main page. That means you may click on a piece of media that shows 2 views in the main list but open a page showing many more. This is because the 2 views in the main list occurred during the selected time range, but more views / downloads occurred outside that time range.
The top card includes the media's name, type, length, and the date it was added. From here, you can click Open Media to open the Media Details Page for the media. Expand the card to see the date the media was created, its unique Media ID, description, and tags (if any).
The middle cards provide the following data:
- Top Viewers - The top three students with the most views of the media.
- View Breakout - The percentage of Video on Demand (VOD) views versus the percentage of Live Views.
-
Average View Time - Average media viewing time for this user for this media. This is calculated by taking the total view time and dividing it by the total views.
If this media was originally broadcast as a live stream (except from legacy SCHD appliances), the time spent viewing the live stream is included. Legacy SCHD appliances do not provide time-viewed data for live streams.
A Note about Time: The "view time" references in the data do not consider the speed at which the media was viewed. If a user viewed 20 minutes of a 30-minute video at 2x speed while they spent 10 "real-time" minutes viewing the media, our View Time data shows they viewed 20 minutes of the video.
- Total Downloads - The number of times this media has been downloaded for offline viewing (if downloads are possible).
The data provided for each user shown includes the following:
- Total Views - Total number of views logged by the user.
- Total View Time - Total media viewing time for this user for this media.
-
Average View Time - Average media viewing time for this user for this media. This is calculated by taking the total view time and dividing it by the total views.
If this media was originally broadcast as a live stream (except from legacy SCHD appliances), this includes the time spent viewing the live stream. Legacy SCHD appliances do not provide time-viewed data for live streams.
A Note about Time: The "view time" references in the data do not take the speed at which the media was viewed into consideration. Meaning if a user viewed 20 minutes of a 30 minute video at 2x speed, while they spent 10 "real-time" minutes viewing the media, our View Time data shows they viewed 20 minutes of the video.
- % Viewed - The total percentage viewed for this user for this media (regardless of the total view count).
- On Demand Views - Number of times this user viewed the processed video file (as opposed to a live stream).
- Live View Count - Number of times this user clicked "view live stream" during the live stream (if applicable, and not for live streams from SCHD appliances).
- Downloads - Number of times this user downloaded this media for offline viewing (if downloads are possible for this media).
- Last Viewed - The date this user last viewed this media. NOTE that this is in UTC or Universal Time Code and NOT "local time".
Media Analytics - Polls Page
The Polls tab is available immediately below the Views tab on the left side on the page, and contains student polling response information for all poll questions in any presentations or interactive media associated with this LMS / VLE course. If you have viewed the Polling tab for an EchoVideo course section to review student responses to polling questions, this page will look somewhat familiar to you.
The polling response data on this page includes all EchoVideo section media, if the LMS / VLE course is linked to an EchoVideo section (both presentations and interactive media), as well as any interactive media embedded directly into the LMS / VLE course.
Total Response Rate is a percentage of POSSIBLE responses given to polls across all media. This calculates the number of students times the total number of polls in all media divided by the actual number of responses.
Total Correct is the percentage of correct vs incorrect responses given to polls across the course. The calculation only considers polls that can and do have a correct response identified.
Below the Overview, you will find two drop-down lists.
The Media drop-down list allows you to select a particular presentation or interactive media to view polling responses. When you launch this tab, we automatically select the first one for you.
After selecting a piece of media, the lower part of the page changes to show overview information across all of the questions in the selected media.
The Poll Question dropdown list allows you to select a particular question in the selected media to view student responses for.
This page works exactly like the Polling tab for EchoVideo course sections, complete with links to popups for more information about any given poll question, and links to popups for more information on any given student's responses. If necessary, see Viewing Responses to Polls in EchoVideo Course Media for detailed instructions and information on each type of polling question.
Downloading Views and Polling Data
The Views tab and the Polls tab contain a Download Data button, shown in the figures on this page. Like all downloads from EchoVideo, the file downloaded is a comma-separated values (CSV) file, and can be opened as a flat file or in a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel or Apple Numbers. Additionally, the Views Data Download can be downloaded as a ZIP file of selected media data.
Views Data Download
Like all data on the Views page, the Views data download is subject to the Time Range dropdown list. The downloaded file lists viewing details for each user who has viewed the media within the selected time frame.
The downloaded file's filename includes the LMS / VLE course name and the data's date range, with start and end dates in UTC.
The data in the download is nearly identical to the download from the media details page. However, views of media by a single user from different locations (embedded in the LMS / VLE and viewed within an EchoVideo section) are not broken out into separate rows. Otherwise, the data and fields provided are the same.
Polls Data Download
Unlike the Views data, the Polls data download is NOT limited by time range. The Polls page and the downloads from the page include all polling responses for all polling questions in all interactive media or presentations associated with this LMS / VLE course.
The filename of the downloaded file includes the LMS / VLE course name and the date and time the file was generated (when you clicked Download Data) in LOCAL time.
The data in the download is nearly identical to the download available from the polling tab for an EchoVideo course, except that the download lists the LMS course name for each entry instead of Lesson Name. Media is delineated by ID and media name.
Finding your EchoVideo Media Analytics Tool
Each LMS / VLE places external tools differently, depending on how it is configured and where you or your administrator may have put the tool link. The button looks something like one of the following logos (but smaller). Which logo you see depends on what your administrator configured when integrating EchoVideo with your LMS.
The images below provide some basic navigation for where to find the analytics tool link in your LMS / VLE. But contact your administrator if you are still having problems.
Blackboard
The Media Analytics tool in Blackboard is created as a Course Tool. This means it should appear in any Course Tool selection list.
In Blackboard Learn, Course Tools appears under Course Management in the left navigation, and can be expanded to show your options, including one for the EchoVideo Media Analytics tool, as shown in the below figure.
In Blackboard Ultra, Course Tools are available under the Books & Tools option in the Details & Actions list for each course. Selecting this option opens a side-panel with available course tools, including one for the EchoVideo Media Analytics tool, as shown in the below figure:
Canvas
The EchoVideo Media Analytics link in Canvas lives in the left navigation of your Canvas courses, as shown in the figure below.
The below figure shows the EchoVideo media analytic page open inside the Canvas frame for demonstration purposes. Your administrator may have configured the tool to open in a new tab. If it does not, and you want more space to view the data, you can right-click either the Views or Polls tab on the Analytics page and select to open in a new tab.
Canvas also has a "My Analytics" tool that, if present, also resides in the left navigation. The Canvas analytics tool provides data from Canvas for student course usage. The EchoVideo analytics tool provides media viewing data for EchoVideo media associated with this course and as described on this page.
D2L / Brightspace
If configured as recommended, the EchoVideo Media Analytics tool in Brightspace is available in the Course Navigation bar at the top of your Brightspace courses, as shown in the figure below.
If the analytics option does not appear in the toolbar, and you have the right to do so, you can add it to the course navigation bar for each course.
Moodle
In Moodle, the EchoVideo Media Analytics tool should be placed in the top section of the course. It should appear with a badge indicating that the link is unavailable to students, as shown in the figure below.
If your course does not have the tool yet, you can turn editing on for the course and select to add it as an activity.
Sakai
In Sakai, the EchoVideo Media Analytics tool appears in the left navigation for your course. If it does not appear for you, it can be added through the Site Info option, adding the External Tool to your course.
