Who must do this?
Users who log in to their LMS / VLE (Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, D2L / Brightspace, or Sakai) and then access EchoVideo. If you log in to your university portal and then access the LMS / VLE or EchoVideo, this page does not apply to you. That method is called single sign-on, or SSO; EchoVideo Mobile Apps support SSO and do not require you to log in to the apps with a separate EchoVideo password.
If you normally access EchoVideo through your LMS / VLE (Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, D2L, or Sakai), you can still use the EchoVideo Mobile Apps to view and interact with your section materials. However, using the Mobile Apps effectively bypasses the LMS / VLE, so there are a few things you need to ensure you do.
How do I know if I need to do this?
Download and open the EchoVideo mobile app. Enter your Email address into the first field you see and click Submit. If the next page looks like your university login screen, you are an SSO user, and you do not need to set a password. However, you should review the section below on accessing your EchoVideo courses at least once in the LMS/VLE before using the EchoVideo apps to view them.
Establish an EchoVideo Password
Normally, when you enter EchoVideo through the LMS / VLE, you have already logged into either the LMS or your institution's portal, and been authorized access. EchoVideo simply trusts the main system and uses your Email address to identify you. Using the Mobile Apps bypasses the LMS / VLE authorization process and therefore requires you to log in directly to EchoVideo. For that, you need a password. Your LMS / VLE and EchoVideo email addresses are (and must be) the same.
To create a direct EchoVideo password:
- Enter EchoVideo as you normally do, through the LMS.
- Click the Settings icon in the top right corner of the screen (it looks like a gear).
-
Select Account Settings.
Be sure to note your email address; this is the one you will enter in the app when logging in.
- Click Create Password.
The password you create can be the same as or different from your LMS password, as long as it contains 8 characters and meets the other EchoVideo password criteria.
Students Must Access EchoVideo Once Through Each LMS Course
Instructors frequently export EchoVideo participation and engagement information to the LMS for grading. Furthermore, many instructors use EchoVideo student-participation data (often referred to as analytics or engagement analytics) in their grading. The more engaged students are and the more they attend and participate in their classes, the better their grades are often.
But if EchoVideo does not know a student should be coming in through the LMS, it will not export gradebook data for that student. And since the Mobile Apps bypass the LMS (as stated above), the Student LMS EchoVideo Section needs to be established outside the Apps.
All a student has to do is click through each EchoVideo link from each LMS course once. That is it. One time for each EchoVideo link in each LMS course.
That single passthrough into the EchoVideo section establishes the connection for this user from this LMS course into this EchoVideo section. After doing that once for each LMS course, the student can do all their viewing through the Mobile Apps. EchoVideo gathers and maintains activity for each section, regardless of whether it was done via a laptop, through the LMS, or in our Mobile Apps.
Once the connection between the LMS and the EchoVideo section for that student is established, Instructors can export analytic data to the LMS gradebook, including all student engagement data.
Multiple links to a single EchoVideo section? If the instructor establishes multiple links from the LMS course to EchoVideo—such as different links for different classes—the student must click all EchoVideo links for that student's engagement or participation data to be exported back to the LMS for each link.
