Once Universal Capture: Classroom is installed and has been assigned to a room, you can configure the device input settings for the room.
Room configuration, described below, defines which devices (microphones, webcams, monitors, etc.) will be used to capture each input (Audio, Video, Display). The input(s) to be captured for each class (i.e., A/D/V or A/V) is configured when creating the capture schedule or when creating a device ad hoc capture for instructors.
In Universal Capture: Classroom for the Mac, a user must be logged into the computer for scheduled recordings to be able to record audio and video sources. Display sources will always be recorded when configured. Furthermore, if the user logs out during the recording, any video or audio will stop at that point.
In Universal Capture: Classroom for Windows, no user login on the PC is required to be able to record audio and video sources for scheduled captures.
To set UC: Classroom defaults:
- Navigate to the ROOMS page.
- Use the filtering drop-down lists and/or Search text box to find the room containing the Universal Capture device.
- Hover your mouse over the Room tile to show the menu arrow in the top-right corner of the tile.
- Click the menu arrow and select Configure.
The Configure Room dialog box appears, with the capture input section at the top of the box. The options are described in more detail in the section below.
- Scroll down to see the Configurations section at the bottom of the box.
Universal Capture requires the use of the HTTPS protocol.
The Universal Capture: Online interface is not available behind an HTTP proxy.
Select NONE for Universal Capture to automatically detect an Unauthenticated Proxy Server. - When finished making changes, click SAVE to retain your changes, click DOWNLOAD to download a device.xml file with the configuration shown, or click SAVE AND DOWNLOAD to do both.
Setting input devices for capture
The input section of the Configure Room page allows you to select which devices will be used to capture each input type. Your options include all of the capture devices (cameras, microphones, and display inputs) that have been installed on the machine and have been detected by Universal Capture (even if not currently connected) as well as any IP Cameras configured for your Institution. See Supported Devices for Universal Capture, IP Camera Support, and Capture Card Support for more information.
When you schedule a capture for the room (recurring or one-time), you can select what inputs you want to capture. The Room configurations described here will identify which devices are used for each input type.
NOTE: These settings only identify devices that can be used as an input; the capture configuration identifies what inputs to capture.
To set the audio input device
- In the Audio section of the Configure Room dialog box, use the drop-down list to select the audio device you want to use.
The Mute option is provided if you are planning to capture audio through an alternate device input (Display with System Audio) and ONLY want that audio feed. See note below on multiple audio feeds.
To set the primary display input device
- In the Display section of the Configure Room dialog box, enable the Display-1 slider, then use the drop-down list to select the display input you want to use with or without System Audio.
By default, Universal Capture will use the primary display of the computer without System Audio. If the computer has a secondary display attached, you can select that instead, with or without System Audio.
Multiple Audio feeds? Universal Capture allows you to capture the local System Audio for recordings. This means that Universal Capture can capture up to two different audio feeds (one input for System Audio plus the Audio channel). When the capture is processed, all enabled audio feeds are merged and synced to generate the audio for the capture playback.
Bottom line: You don't need to use anything except the Audio channel, but you can, either in addition to or instead of the Audio channel input. To capture ONLY System Audio, select Mute for the Audio channel.
To set a secondary display input device
- In the Display section of the Configure Room dialog box, enable the Display-2 slider, then use the drop-down list to select the display input you want to use.
System Audio options are not available for secondary display inputs as only the primary display input is used for A/D and A/D/V captures.
To set the primary video input device
- In the Video section of the Configure Room dialog box, enable the Video-1 slider, then use the drop-down list to select the video device you want to use.
To set a secondary video input device
- In the Video section of the Configure Room dialog box, enable the Video-2 slider, then use the drop-down list to select the video device you want to use.
NOTE: The secondary input sliders of the Configure Room dialog box do not appear unless both the primary input slider is enabled and a secondary device is detected.
