PowerPoint communication errors happen while either launching PowerPoint Polling from PointSolutions Desktop or inserting a slide once you have your PowerPoint presentation open. Most communication errors can be resolved by following the instructions below. The instructions are listed from most common to least common resolutions.
Security Settings
The most common communication error issue can be resolved by updating your security settings.
- Ensure PointSolutions Desktop is closed.
- Open your Mac’s System Preferences.
- Go to the Security & Privacy.
- Click the Privacy Tab at the top of the window.
- Choose Automation from the left side of the window.
- Find PointSolutions and check the box next to it.
- Close System Preferences and reopen PointSolutions Desktop.
PowerPoint Library
Occasionally, the PowerPoint library for PointSolutions will need to be repaired.
- Ensure PointSolutions Desktop is closed.
- Go to the following folder: /Library/CFMSupport
You can quickly get here by pressing Command + Space to open a search bar and typing that path in there.
- Delete the following files:
- powerpoint-message-handler.1.0.0
- TTSharedLib.2.0.0.dylib
- Launch PointSolutions Desktop.
- Click Install Library located in the PowerPoint Polling section.
- Launch PowerPoint Polling.
Set the Correct Path for PowerPoint
If the previous instructions did not resolve the issue, try the following:
- Ensure PointSolutions Desktop is closed.
- Open Terminal.
To do this, press Command + Space, type Terminal, and press Return / Enter.
Or from your Desktop menu, click Go > Utilities > Terminal. - In the Terminal, copy and paste the following command and press Return / Enter.
defaults write com.turningtechnologies.turningpoint.app TTSettingsKeyPreferredPowerPointLocation -string "/Applications/Microsoft PowerPoint.app" - Copy / paste the following command and press Return / Enter.
killall cfprefsd
Reset Apple Events
If the issue is still occurring, try the following:
- Ensure PointSolutions Desktop is closed.
- Open Terminal.
To do this, press Command + Space, type Terminal, and press Return / Enter.
Or from your Desktop menu, click Go > Utilities > Terminal. - Copy / paste the following command and press Return / Enter.
tccutil reset AppleEvents
It will look like nothing happened when you enter this command, and that is expected.
- Open PointSolutions Desktop and start PowerPoint Polling.
- Allow PointSolutions to control PowerPoint.
- Add a polling slide in PowerPoint.
Microsoft Office Deployment Using Jamf Pro
The default configuration for Microsoft Office 365 when deployed through Jamf Pro disables the ability to load external dylibs. By modifying the settings below when deploying, PointSolutions will be allowed to run.
DisableVisualBasicExternalDylibs = 0
DisableVisualBasicToBindToPopen = 0
AllowVisualBasicToBindToSystem = 1
PowerPoint Could Not Load the Add-In
The SaveAsAdobePDF might need disabled if PointSolutions Desktop is not working.
To disable the add-in
- Open PowerPoint and select tools from the PowerPoint menu.
- Select PowerPoint Add-ins….
- Uncheck SaveAsAdobePDF.
- Select OK.

To obtain a Console Log
- Ensure PointSolutions Desktop and PowerPoint are closed.
- Open Console.
- To do this, go to your Desktop and go to the top of the screen and click Go Utilities Console.
- Enter PointSolutions in the search box and press Return / Enter.
- Launch PointSolutions and open PowerPoint Polling.
- Try to add a Polling Slide.
- In Console, copy the contents of the log.
- Paste the log into an email and send it to support@echo360.com along with a description of what you are experiencing.
