There are two templates in knowbly for creating interactive exercises with video files of your choice:
- The Annotated Video Widget is an Activity template where you can add presentation layers on top of videos applied to the timeline of the video player. For each timeline marker, you can add
- Annotations: a layer of content that displays over a paused video at a certain timeline marker.
- Bookmarks: A time-stamped label to identify key sections of a video. These are compiled into a table of contents accessible by the learner for navigation.
- The Video Assessment Widget is an Assessment template. In addition to Annotations and Bookmarks mentioned above, you can also add assessment layers. For each timeline marker, you can add true/false, multiple choice, fill in the blank, multiple select, short answer questions to display over a paused video. When placed on an Assessment page and exported in a SCORM package, assessments will be captured in your LMS.

Example of a Table of Contents:
To create a Video widget (either from the Content Manager or directly into a block in a course you are editing) select the widget template from the Add Widget window.
Note: If you are starting from a lesson page, a sample widget is inserted into your lesson. (You can replace the sample content with your own, of course.)
If you're not already, switch to Edit mode. If you're working in a course block, click the Edit Widget link.
Adding Video
After you name your widget you will be asked to add the video file. The video widgets support streaming video links as well as uploaded video files.
Adding Layers
Next, you will see a series of layers similar to what is shown below. Each of these layers forms a display or assessment layer in the widget.
- In this example, you see an Annotation layer that is set to start at the very beginning of the video.
- To add a Start Time, play the video until the section you want to annotate appears. Pause the video and enter the time-stamp. In the example below the Start Time would be 00:00:24.
- You can change the type of layer in the upper left corner. (Note that the assessment layers are only available in the Video Assessment widget.)
- You can add multimedia to your Content layers if you choose.
- Click the Replace media icon to replace the video.
- Open the settings panel to adjust the settings that are unique to these widgets. Here you can switch between the Annotated Video and Video Assessment Mode:
- The Annotated Video widget has the following settings:
- Autoplay: If checked, video playback will start as soon as the widget loads.
- Disable Scrubbing: If checked, Disable Scrubbing prevents learners from navigating forward or backwards through the video. They will only be able to play and pause the video.
- Table of Contents: Select which items you want to appear.
- The Video Assessment widget has these additional settings:
- Assessment Attempts: To limit the number of times a user can take an assessment, choose Limited, and enter a maximum number of attempts
- Question Attempts: To limit the number of times a user can attempt to correctly answer each question, choose Limited, and enter a maximum number of attempts.
- Answer Order: For each question, present answer options in the fixed order that you choose or in random order.
- At any time during editing or when you have finished, click Preview to see what a published version will look like.
