NOTICE: EXAMVIEW END-OF-LIFE ANNOUNCEMENT
As of June 30, 2024, ExamView will officially reach its end of life.
Please be advised that after ExamView’s end-of-life date of June 30th, 2024, we will no longer be providing updates, security patches, or technical support for any version of ExamView. Our obligations to maintain or support ExamView will cease as of this date. Continued use of ExamView post end-of-life may expose you to increased security vulnerabilities, compatibility issues, and potentially reduced functionality. To avoid these risks and ensure uninterrupted service, we encourage migrating to EchoExam, which is designed to offer superior security, compatibility, and a range of advanced features that align with current technological standards. Using ExamView v11 you can export tests and question banks to Moodle. This feature gives you the flexibility to create tests in ExamView and then deliver them online via Moodle.
Exporting a Test / Question Bank for Moodle
Question banks or tests can be exported to a Moodle-formatted file for import into the LMS.
- Create or open a test / question bank in ExamView Test Generator.
- Click File from the menu bar.
- Choose Export.
- Select Moodle.
- Select the save location, enter a File name and click Save.
The question content is saved as a ZIP file.
Take note of where the file is being saved as you will need to locate it later when uploading to the Moodle Course. The file is not saved until the Export to Moodle wizard is completed.
- Under Test Information, enter a Name.
You may also enter an optional description to provide additional information about the test or bank.
The Name is the name displayed in Moodle's Course Materials or Resources. Choose a name that will be helpful to you in working with the questions. For example, you could use Chapter 1. The name can be a maximum of 128 characters.
- Leave the Formatting and Feedback options at their default.
- Enter a unique Directory Name for the test / question bank images.
Make sure that the folder name is unique for this question pool. The Directory Name is used to store images that are required by questions in the test or question bank. The name you supply should be unique for the test or question bank you are exporting. If you use the same name for multiple tests or question banks, images may be overwritten when the file is imported into Moodle. In this case, the questions in the existing question pool or quiz will show the wrong images. If you are exporting the same test or question bank multiple times, you can save space on your Moodle server by using the same Directory Name for images each time you export. If none of the questions in your test / question bank contain images, the directory name you provide will be ignored. However, you must still supply a name.
-
Click OK to export the test / question bank.
The question content export is saved as a ZIP file.

Moodle Troubleshooting
If you have problems exporting / importing questions, refer to the information provided below.
The following information describes situations where content exported from ExamView may be modified to fit the constraints imposed by Moodle.
- Moodle 3.1.2 does not support the concept of a narrative (a common piece of information shared by multiple questions).
- During export to Moodle 3.1.2, ExamView copies the content of each narrative to every question that refers to the narrative.
- Moodle 3.1.2 supports Matching groups with images in the questions, not the answer choices.
- Moodle 3.1.2 supports Matching groups with at least two questions and three answer choices.
- During import to Moodle 3.1.2, ExamView Multiple Choice and Multiple Response answer choices not set to scramble, default to allow the choices to be shuffled. Please double check your questions in Moodle to ensure accuracy.
- Commonly used characters are well supported. Some of the less common characters are not supported.
