If an Administrator has enabled LMS Simplified Course Provisioning, the initial click through into Echo360 from the LMS course automatically creates an Echo360 course and section. The Instructor who configures the link to Echo360 MAY have to select the Term (current or future) into which the new section is put.
Instructors, Teaching Assistants, and Students who subsequently click through that link are automatically enrolled into the Echo360 section as their respective LMS roles.
After the Echo360 course is created, Instructors can add additional LTI links into Echo360 in this LMS course. Those links then provide three different "link target" options, described in the below sections on this page.
Link to Class Content in the Section
As described in Instructor How-Tos for Simplified Course Provisioning, Instructors can create classes in their Echo360 sections and fill them with the videos and presentations they want the students to view. Once those classes are established, instructors can generate links in their LMS course that point directly into each classroom.
To create a link from the LMS to a specific class:
- In your LMS, create an External Tool link, probably in the same way as you created the original link into Echo360.
-
Click the link.
The below figure shows a Blackboard course with multiple Content links into Echo360. The one identified with the arrow is to correspond with a particular class in the Echo section.
- In the Echo360 options screen that appears, select which class you want this link to open for students.
- Click Continue.
The page changes to show the class you just linked to, with any media currently published to the class available for viewing.
RETURN to the LMS course and repeat these steps to create additional links in your LMS course to other Echo360 section classes.
Create Another Echo360 Section in the Same Course
Sometimes, the LMS Course needs to generate and connect to multiple sections (1:many relationship). For example, the original section might be for lectures or seminars, and a second section might be needed for Lab or Group work.
If this describes your situation, after the initial click-through section is created, you can create another LTI Tool link to Echo360. When you click through this subsequent link, you will have the option to create another section. The new section will reside in the same Echo360 course as the original one, and default to Section Number 002, though you can change the section number/identifier if you want to.
Technical Detail: Actually, some LMS/VLE will send a Section name to Echo360, that we will use as the Section name. Where this name comes from depends on what LMS/VLE you are using. Moodle, for example, uses the Course ID field. All this means is that the default value shown for your new section may NOT be "002", but you can (and should) edit it to reflect the new section you are creating within this LMS-linked course.
To create a subsequent Echo360 section from the LMS course:
- In your LMS course, create a new External Tool link, in the same way as you created the original link into Echo360.
-
Click the link.
The below figure shows a Blackboard course with multiple Content links into Echo360. The one identified with the arrow is to correspond with a new section in Echo within the same course.
- If the simplified provisioning is configured to request it, you may be asked to select a term (see the figure at the top of this page). Select the SAME term that was used for the original Echo360 section.
Ignore this step if you do not see this option. - In the Echo360 options screen that appears, scroll down (if necessary) to find and select the Create new section option, as is identified in the below figure.
The panel changes to provide a text box containing the Section Number to use for this new section, as shown in the below figure. Since the initially created section is 001, the number defaults to 002 (or 003 or 004, if you have created multiple sections in this course).
- Accept the default or enter a different section number/identifier for the new section. You can use anything you want as long as it is unique within the Echo360 course.
- Click Continue.
The page changes and shows the newly created section, including the number (or other identifier) entered to create it. At this point, you can use the guidance provided in Instructor How-Tos for Simplified Course Provisioning to set up your new section.
Link to Section Home Page
The "section home page" is just the class list for a section. It is where students should go to view the materials you have posted for them for the course.
The initial link-through to Echo both creates the section and links to this section home page. However if you need a second link into the home page, or something happens to the original link, you can create a new one at any time. Since it is unlikely that the LMS Course-Echo360 Section mapping has changed, even if the original link gets deleted or removed, the LMS course is still linked to the Echo section. You may simply need to re-establish a "main" section link, or put a second one somewhere else.
One example of needing a second link would be for Canvas. When an External Tool link to Echo360 is created in Canvas, it creates a "course navigation" link that appears in the left-panel for the course. You can use this link for all entries into the Echo360 section and if it is the first link followed to create the Echo360 section, it will always put users onto the section home page.
However, this left navigation link does NOT allow for exporting analytics from Echo360 into the Canvas gradebook; it does not create a gradebook column. Canvas requires Assignment links to do that. So what you CAN do is create a new Assignment link that points to the section home page (class list), that will allow you to export student engagement data rolled up for the section, in addition to exporting for specific classes (if you have other links configured to do so).
To create a link from the LMS to a specific class:
- In your LMS course, create a new External Tool link into Echo360. It may need to be in a different location than the original, as the Canvas example describes.
- Click the link.
- In the Echo360 options screen that appears, scroll down (if necessary) to find and select the Link to existing section home page option.
The panel changes to provide a drop-down list showing the initially mapped section by default. This list only matters if you have created MULTIPLE Echo360 sections through this LMS Course and need to select which section's home page you are trying to link to.
- Accept the default section shown or select a different one if you have multiple section options.
- Click Continue.
The page changes to show the section home page for the section you have linked to.
