Upgrading the EchoVideo Atto Plug-in: If you are using an older version of the Atto plugin (before 1.0.17) you should upgrade to the newest version in order to provide instructors with detailed viewing data for embedded media as well as the ability to embed interactive media (videos with polling questions embedded in them). As of this publishing, the newest version is 1.0.30. See Upgrading the EchoVideo Atto Plugin for instructions.
EchoVideo provides plugins that once installed, generate an EchoVideo button in the content editor for easy access to embedding EchoVideo media. This plugin allows users to embed media from their EchoVideo library directly into a Moodle page or content window. For Moodle versions 4.1 and lower, use the Atto version of the plugin, and for Moodle versions 4.1 and higher, use the TinyMCE version of the plugin.
While you can install JUST the plugin to provide the "easy embed" button, installing the filter that accompanies the plugin allows students to submit EchoVideo videos as assignment responses (or more accurately, allows instructors to view those videos within the assignment pages). Student media submitted as Assignment responses are locked down in EchoVideo and cannot be edited or deleted by the student.
Administrators can use the EchoVideo embed button to embed any media in the system to which they have access (visible on the Captures page of EchoVideo).
The LMS Configuration information (Key, Secret, and URL) can be the same as they are for the External Tool you may already have configured in Moodle for EchoVideo.
These procedures must be performed by the Moodle / EchoVideo administrator. Please also note that the Moodle instructions below are provided as a guide; please refer to Moodle documentation for further details if necessary.
To install the EchoVideo Plugin and Filter
- Log into EchoVideo as an Administrator and navigate to the Downloads page (Settings > Downloads).
- Scroll down to find the Moodle plugin entry on the page, then click on the desired plugin, saving the .zip file to your local drive.
The Downloaded .zip file contains two additional .zip files and a README within it. These are shown in the figure in the following step.
-
EXTRACT the contents of the downloaded .zip file, and SAVE the two enclosed .zip files to a known location. Leave the extracted .zip files as they are. DO NOT extract the files from these sub-.zip files. Moodle will do that for you.
- Log into Moodle as an Admin and click Site Administration.
- Navigate to Plugins and select Install plugins.
- Click Choose a file and find the
tiny_echo360-###.zip
file extracted from the download.
You MUST install the tiny plugin before installing the filter.
- When the zip file has been uploaded, click Install plugin from the ZIP file.
- Verify that the validation step shows no errors, and click Continue.
If the installation fails, check any errors listed in the Validation log shown; you MUST have write permissions on the Plugins directory on the Moodle server. If the error indicates that you do not have these permissions, contact your System Administrator or another Moodle Administrator to obtain these permissions.
- Verify that the Server checks page shows no errors, and click Continue.
If the Server checks page fails and does not meet all minimum system requirements, contact your System Administrator or another Moodle Administrator to obtain these permissions.
- On the Plugins check page, click Upgrade Moodle database now.
- REPEAT the above installation steps but instead select the
filter_echo360-###.zip
file. The most common cause of failure to install the filter is due to a dependency the filter has on the atto plugin; you MUST install / upgrade the
echo360attoplugin
BEFORE trying to install or upgrade the filter. - On the Plugins check page, click Upgrade Moodle database now.
- On the Upgrading to new version screen, click Continue.
The New settings - Echo360 Plugin (Tiny) Settings window opens.
- Navigate to Site Administration > Plugins > Filters > Manage filters.
- Find the Echo360 LTI Launch Filter and ensure that it is turned ON and that it is set to apply to Content, as shown below.
You MAY need to increase the priority of the EchoVideo filter in the list in order to embed videos in Moodle Labels.
- If you are not prompted for LTI settings during the installation process, navigate to Site Administration > Plugins and scroll down to Text Editors.
- From the Text Editors list, click EchoVideo Plugin (Atto or TinyMCE) Settings.
- Open a new tab or browser window, and log into EchoVideo as an Administrator.
- Select the Settings icon in the upper-right portion of the screen, then select Institution Settings > Integration > LMS / VLE.
The LTI 1.1 Configurations page appears by default.
- Find your existing Moodle LMS configuration.
- Copy the Consumer Key, Shared Secret, and Host URL values from EchoVideo into the Echo360 plugin (TinyMCE or Atto) settings in Moodle.
In EchoVideo, select some of each field then use Ctrl + A / Command + A to "select all" of the field, then Ctrl + C / Command + C to be sure to copy the whole field. In Moodle, place your cursor in the field and press Ctrl + V / Command + V to paste the value.
- Click Save changes.
If you are installing the EchoVideo Plugin for the FIRST TIME, there is one more set of configuration procedures necessary. If you are upgrading, these steps should not be necessary, however, if the EchoVideo embed button does not appear for a content window, review the below steps to see if you need to make a change to the plugin (TinyMCE or Atto) settings.
To complete the EchoVideo embed plugin and filter installation in Moodle
- In Moodle, navigate to Site Administration > Plugins.
- Scroll down to the Text editors section and click on the Text editors link.
- In the Text editors list, make sure the plugin you are using (TinyMCE or Atto) is at the top. If it is not, use the up-arrow next to it to move it to the top.
If you must change the order of the editors shown, you will be taken to the Manage Editors page; you will need to click Text Editors from the breadcrumbs links at the top to return to the Text Editors page and continue as described below. - Below the Text Editors list, click the Echo360 plugin (TinyMCE or Atto)
- Scroll down the list of plugins to find the EchoVideo plugin (TinyMCE or Atto), shown in the below figure, then highlight and copy the plugin name (Ctrl + v or Command + c).
- Scroll farther down the page to the Toolbar config section, then scroll to the bottom of the config list to find Other.
-
Paste the Echo360 plugin name (Ctrl + v or Command + v) into the Other value in the Toolbar config list (adding it to whatever is already there). Alternatively, you can type in the name of the plugin which should be
echo360attoplugin
.
- Navigate to Site Administration > Plugins > Text editors > Collapse toolbar settings. Increase the Show first (n) groups when collapsed value to ensure the EchoVideo button will appear by default for all users. The below figure shows this value set to 20, which is the maximum.
- Click Save changes.
The Content window toolbar should now provide the EchoVideo button for embedding media. Users can embed any media they own. Administrators can embed any media they have access to in the system.
