Generating a Web Link and Embed Code for a Video
Last Updated: Mar 04, 2019 03:30PM EST

This article applies to:  Echo360 Instructors

NOTES ABOUT VIDEO ACCESS LINKS:
 - This feature is ONLY available for for content if you own it. (Admins can create public links for all captures they can see. They have their own article for this.)
 - This feature ONLY applies to video media.
 - Administrators can DISABLE the ability to generate video links, and they can do so for Instructors or Students or both. If the feature has been disabled for your role, you will NOT see any of the options discussed on this page.
 - If you want to embed a video into a Blackboard, Canvas, or Moodle content page, there may be an Echo360 Embed Button available for you. The embed button is a shortcut for embedding Echo360 videos into LMS content pages. See Embedding Echo360 Videos into Blackboard,  Embedding Echo360 Videos into Canvas or Embedding Echo360 Videos into Moodle as appropriate for details.
 - If you DO embed a video into an LMS content page using the Embed Button, you will see a corresponding link on the Sharing tab in the Content Details page, and in the Links list in the Share Settings modal for that video.
 - Finally, you can generate a video link and paste it as the Embed Media URL for an Echo360 Media Slide. This allows you to include Echo videos in your presentations.

There may be times when a capture or video needs to be shared with a larger audience than a few classes or even just Echo360 users. In this case, you can generate a URL directly to the video, then post that link anywhere you like. You can also generate "embed code" to surround the link, for embedding directly into a portal, embedding in an LMS content page (using the HTML view of the editor), or onto a social media site.

Video Access Links can be Public, allowing anyone with the URL to view the video. Or they can be set to Private, requiring anyone who clicks the link, to log in to Echo360. Private means that only Echo360 users at your institution can view the linked video.

IMPORTANT: Setting a video access link to Private means a user must log in to Echo360 to view it. LMS users who do not have a direct Echo360 login, will need to have already accessed Echo360 in some way (for example, to view a section). As long as they are already authenticated in Echo360 when they click the link, the link will work.

You can also create multiple different links for a piece of content. This allows you to configure different options for each link, for posting in different locations. For example, you may have a public link that doesn't require authentication and a private one that does. This allows you to post them in different locations, and to deactivate and/or delete one of them without affecting the other.

Generating and deleting video links can be done from the Content Home page, as well as from the Sharing tab of the Content Details page. Both procedures are included on this page.

Generating Links to Videos from the Content Home Page

To generate a public link to a video from your Content Home

  1. If necessary, click the Echo360 icon in the top left corner to return to the Echo Home page.
  2. Select My Content from the left side of the page to view all the content you own.
  3. Use the Filters and/or Search box to find the item you want to create a link for.
  4. Hover over the media tile and click the Menu button.
  5. Select Share from the media options menu, as shown in the below figure.
Content tile with menu button identified and Share option shown for steps as described

  6. The Individual tab appears by default. Click the Links tab at the top of the modal to open the Links list.
The Links list may be empty, or may contain one or more links already generated for this media.

  7. Click the Add Link button.
If there are no links yet for this media, the button appears in the center of the modal as shown above. If there are already public links to this media, the Add Link button appears below the list of links, as seen below.
  8. As soon as you click Add Link a link is generated, with options as described below the figure.
Links list with new link and settings options available as described

  9. As necessary, configure the options for the link as follows:
    • Share link slider: When enabled (default), the link is active and anyone clicking the link plays the linked content. If deactivated (turn Share link slider off), the link itself remains valid but users clicking the link cannot view the content. This works to temporarily disable the link.
    • Description: Enter a description for the link. This is useful for identifying the purpose of the link or the location to which it is to be posted. The description is for your purposes only and does not appear outside of Echo360.
    • Start At: When enabled, allows you to set a 'starting location' for the video. Users can view the entirety of the video, but by default the video begins playing at the location you set.
    • Public access slider: When enabled (default), any person with the URL can view the video. Disabling this slider will require a user log into Echo360 to view the video (making access Private instead of Public)
    • Copy: Use the Copy button to copy the link URL to your clipboard for pasting into your desired location.
    • Embed: Use the Embed button to generate embed code to surround the link. This is described further in the next step.
    • Delete: Permanently deletes the URL and its relationship with the content. If the URL remains posted publicly, clicking it will return a content not found error, as there is no longer any association between the URL and the content.

  10. If appropriate, click EMBED to generate embed code around the link for embedding into an accommodating program or location (such as an LMS content window).
  11. In the Embed link dialog box, you can select Size options for the embedded frame, as well as Autoplay and Automute options. Autoplay and Automute are OFF by default.
NOTE: If you enable Autoplay, Automute is also enabled; this is to accommodate browsers that do not allow for sound with autoplay content. You can enable Automute separately from Autoplay however.

  12. Once the embed options are configured, click Copy to copy the full embed code to your clipboard for pasting to the desired location.
  13. Click Done to close the Embed link dialog box and return to the Links list.
  14. When finished generating links to the content, click Done at the bottom of the Share settings modal.

You can generate as many Links to a video as you like, in order to create links with different properties for posting in different places (embedded links or public vs. private links, etc). Multiple links also allows you to disable one link, which may be posted in one location, while leaving a second link active.

When you no longer need a public link to the video, click the Delete button for that link. Deleting a link is permanent. Remember that you can deactivate a link by disabling the Share link slider, in case the permanent deletion of a public link is not appropriate.

Generating Video Links from the Content Details Page

To generate a public link to a video from the content details page

  1. There are a few ways to open the Content Details page:
    • Click on a content tile in your Echo Content Home page
    • Click the menu button for a content tile and select View
  2. Scroll to the bottom section of the Content Details page and click the SHARING tab as shown below.

  3. In the Access links section of the Sharing tab, click ADD LINK
The Access links section changes to show the newly generated link along with the options available.

  4. As necessary, configure the options for the link as follows:
    • Active slider: When enabled, clicking the link plays the linked content. If deactivated (turn Active slider off), the link itself remains valid but users clicking the link cannot view the content. This works to temporarily disable the link.
    • Delete: Permanently deletes the URL and its relationship with the content. If the URL remains posted publicly, clicking it will return a content not found error, as there is no longer any association between the URL and the content. Future public links to this content will have a different ID number in the URL.
    • Description: Enter a description for the link. This is useful for identifying the purpose of the link or the location to which it is to be posted.
    • Start at slider: When enabled, allows you to set a 'starting location' for the content. Users can view the entirety of the video, but by default the video begins playing at the location you set.
    • Access options: Select Private or Public. Public is selected by default.
Selecting Private means that only Echo360 users can view the video. If a user clicks a Private Access link, they will be asked to log in.
Selecting Public means that any person with the link can view the video. This is the default.

  5. If appropriate, click EMBED to generate embed code around the link for embedding into an accommodating program or location (such as an LMS content window).
Embed pop up modal with options as described

  6. In the Embed modal that appears, configure the embed link options as follows:
    • Size drop-down: Select the size (height and width) of the embedded video playback. For bandwidth considerations of the viewer, select the smallest size reasonable for the type of content being posted.
    • Autoplay slider: When enabled, the content automatically begins playing when the link is accessed.
    • Automute slider: Only available if Autoplay is enabled; automatically mutes the video on playback. Users can un-mute the content as needed.

  7. Click COPY to copy the embed code to your system Clipboard. From there you can paste the entry anywhere you need to.
  8. Click Cancel to close the Embed modal.
  9. When finished, exit the page by clicking the browser's Back button, or click the Echo360 Logo in the top left corner of the page.

The link you create appears in the Sharing tab until it is deleted. It is available for all users who have access to a content's sharing information (content owners and admins).

Click into the Link box of a public link to copy it again, at any time.

YOU CAN CREATE MULTIPLE VIDEO LINKS:  Notice that after you create a link, the ADD LINKS button remains. This allows you to create additional public links with different properties as needed.
