Exporting Student Analytic Data to CSV File
Last Updated: Aug 12, 2019 02:59PM EDT

This article applies to:  Echo360 Instructors

The Students tab on the Analytics page for a course contains a nice big friendly blue EXPORT button that allows you to export the data shown in the grid on the page.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! The Exported file contains MORE columns of data than shown on the page, providing a great deal of detail regarding each class in the course, and the student interactions with it.

OH BUT THAT'S NOT ALL EITHER! There are actually TWO different exports you can generate from the Students tab, detailed on this page:

Both exports have many of the same fields, but the class-specific export contains a few more details regarding the media in the class itself. Both exports are defined below. NOTE that if you filter the grid on the page for a specific class, the export you generate will only include that class' data.

Both the interface-shown columns and the exported columns are detailed in Definitions of Analytics Data Metrics, but are also briefly described on this page, for ease of access. See the other article, however, if you need more information than is provided below.

This data is updated throughout the day, at least hourly but typically a few times an hour. So while student actions may not show up immediately, if you are waiting for student data to update, you should not have to wait long.

To export student analytic data to a CSV file

  1. Decide if you want to export student data for ALL classes, or for a particular class.
  2. Use the Class drop-down list at the top of the page to select a particular class if necessary. Or select (retain) All Classes
  3. Click EXPORT to export the data to a CSV file.
  4. You may be asked where to save the file to, or it may simply end up in your DOWNLOADS folder, depending on your browser settings.
The filename of the export is Students_AllClasses_[today's date].csv OR Students_[ClassDate-ClassName]_[today's date].csv, depending on your selections.

To see this data broken down by Class for all students in the section, see Exporting Class Analytic Data to CSV file. If you need to see this data broken down by metric, for each class/each student, see Exporting Individual Metrics to CSV file

Student data export for All Classes

Sample students export CSV file for All Classes open in Excel containing data fields as described

The Data Fields provided in the Export are as follows:

  • Total Engagement - A total of all of the "countable" data points for each student across all classes in the section. This includes: Video Views, Slide Deck Views, Polling Answers, Q&A Entries, Note Events, Confusion Flags.
  • Weighted Engagement % - Previously called Engagement, this field provides an "engagement percentage" for each student based on the "weight" or importance given to each metric. You can set your own metric weighting, so that this score reflects the student interaction most important to you.
  • Attendance % - The percentage of classes in the section that each student has attended, meaning they entered the classroom while the class was in progress, or for classes with no date/time, interacted with the materials in the class (viewed the video/slides, posted a question, took notes, etc.)
  • Video Views - Total number of times each student viewed class videos across the section. Does not distinguish between multiple views of a single class, or single views of multiple classes.
  • Video Viewed % - The percentage of class videos each student viewed, averaged across all classes in the section.
  • Slide Deck Views - Total number of times each student viewed some portion of the slide decks published across the section. Does not distinguish between multiple views of a single slide deck, or single views of multiple slide decks.
  • Slides Viewed % - The percentage of the class slide decks (non-polling question slides) each student viewed, averaged across all classes in the section.
  • Polling Question Count - The total number of polling questions (also referred to as polling slides or activity slides) published across all classes in the section. Only polling questions where at least one student has submitted an answer are counted, specifically with reference to Polling Participation % calculations. This accommodates a situation where the instructor may not have gotten through all of the polling questions in a class.
  • Polling Responses - The total number of responses provided by each student to all polling questions across all classes in the section.
  • Poll Response Correct Count - The total number of correct responses given by each student to polling questions in the section that have a correct response identified.
  • Poll Response Incorrect Count - The total number of incorrect responses (or non-responses) given by each student to polling questions in the section that have a correct response identified.
  • Polling Participation % - The percentage of polling questions that each student has responded to, averaged across all polling questions in the section. Only calculates for polling questions where at least one student has submitted an answer.
  • Polling Correct % - The percentage of CORRECT answers given by each student to polling questions in the section that have a correct response identified.
  • Note Events - The total number of notes taken (each distinct note entry) by each student across all classes in the section.
  • Q&A Events - The total number of questions and responses entered by each student across all classes in the section. Does not include Q&A entered under "General" grouping on the Q&A tab; only includes Q&A that has been associated with a class.
  • Confusion Flags - The total number of confusion flags posted by each student across all classes in the section.

With respect to percentages, the figures given are aggregated across all classes in the section, but do NOT include future classes that have not happened yet, and also do not include classes without a video or slide deck for their respective view percentages. Understand that this calculation is slightly different than the calculation used for LMS Gradebook Exports, which requires YOU to know what classes to select for calculating then exporting data. See How Gradebook Data is Calculated for more information on Gradebook exports.
