Universal Capture on the Pro and Pod
Last Updated: Oct 07, 2019 01:07PM EDT

This article applies to:  Echo360 Admins

We are in the process of making our appliances Universal Capture-capable (not applicable to SHCDs). What does this mean? The Universal Capture UI will appear for appliances, allowing users to access UC both via the Universal Capture: Device interface and the Universal Capture: Online interface. This provides a consistent user experience across capture platforms so it looks and works the same no matter where or how users are creating content.

Get a sneak peek by opting into the beta!

You can now choose on a Room-by-Room basis whether to enable or disable the Universal Capture beta. This allows you to opt particular Rooms into the beta for testing purposes without having any alterations to other Rooms. Once enabled, the device will take a moment to update to the Universal Capture workers at which point, Universal Capture will be accessible on the device. Administrators will be able to monitor and control the device from the Rooms tab. The Room will become available from both the Instructor ad hoc capture button (if enabled) and via the Universal Capture-specific ad hoc button for Instructors (if enabled). The same Universal Capture features that you are familiar with are also applicable to Appliances. You will also see a new option when configuring the Room to add a label to any selected input. This allows you to add meaningful names to your inputs which users will then see as the input names when scheduling and creating ad hoc captures.

NOTE that the Universal Capture: Device interface is only accessible if single sign-on (SSO) for devices has been enabled for your Institution and is configured on the device. Contact Echo360 support for more information on Device SSO.

The differences you should expect with Universal Capture enabled are:

  • Addition of the "View Room" button on Room card for Administrators to access UC: Online
Dependent on Cloud access feature toggle
  • The "Log in to Device" button on a Room card for Administrators can now take you to both the legacy device Web UI and Universal Capture: Device
  • Room becomes available from both the regular Start Capture button and the Universal Capture button for Instructors
Dependent on both the ad hoc capture button feature toggles
  • Addition of the Label fields to the Room Configuration
  • All the other Universal Capture specific capture enhancements you are familiar with (background upload of captures, ability to edit recordings during processing, etc.)

To enable or disable Universal Capture in a Room

  1. From the main menu, click ROOMS.
  2. Find the room containing either a PRO or a POD that you want to opt-in. Use the filtering lists at the top of the screen to narrow which rooms are shown.
  3. On the room tile, click the chevron in the top right corner, and select Edit.
Room tile with menu open showing options for steps as described
  4. In the Edit Room modal, toggle Enable Universal Capture BETA on or off.
Edit Room modal shown with Beta toggle
  5. Click SAVE.

To add a label to your Universal Capture input(s)

  1. From the main menu, click ROOMS.
  2. Find the room containing either a PRO or a POD that you want to label. Use the filtering lists at the top of the screen to narrow which rooms are shown.
  3. On the room tile, click the chevron in the top right corner, and select Configure.
Room configuration for a PODRoom configuration for a POD with label fields
Room configuration for a PRORoom configuration for a PRO with label fields
  4. Enter a name of your choosing in the Label field (Limit of 15 characters).
  5. Click SAVE.

NOTE that the only option in the Universal Capture UI for audio source selection is "Audio". This is the default selection; it is required and based on the inputs configured in the room. For example, if audio is only configured for the audio input, the "Audio" selection will capture just that input, but if audio is configured for both the audio input and on Channel 1 and/or Channel 2, the "Audio" selection will mux all the configured audio sources together.
