Log in and out of Universal Capture
Last Updated: Feb 26, 2019 09:22AM EST

This article applies to:  Echo360 Instructors

In Universal Capture: Classroom for the Mac, a user must be logged in to for scheduled recordings to be able to record audio and video sources. Display sources will always be recorded when configured. Furthermore, if the user logs out during the recording, any video or audio will stop at that point.

In Universal Capture: Classroom for Windows, no user login is required to be able to record audio and video sources for scheduled captures.

Universal Capture will prompt you to log in if not previously authenticated. If your institution uses Single Sign-On to authorize you (meaning you log into a university portal or other access point, and not directly into Echo360), you will see an institution login page, similar to the one you typically log into. Otherwise, you will see the Echo360 login page.

IMPORTANT: If you access Echo360 through a learning management system (LMS) such as Canvas or Blackboard or Moodle, you must establish a direct login to Echo360 to publish Universal Capture recordings. See Creating or Changing Your Echo360 Password.
If your institution uses single sign-on authentication and you log into an institution portal to access Echo360, Universal Capture will walk you through the login process via your default browser, requesting your institution login credentials.

Depending on your Institution settings, you will encounter one of the following two workflows.

Log in with Simplified Sign In turned OFF (default workflow)

  1. Launch Universal Capture.
    • If using Classroom mode, you can launch via the desktop application, device Web UI or Universal Capture button.
    • If using Personal mode, you must use the desktop application.
  2. If not already authenticated, you will be prompted to login at which point the default browser launches, requesting your email address.

  3. Enter the requested username/email and password if requested, and click SUBMIT.
If your institution uses Single Sign-On to authorize you (meaning you log into a university portal or other access point, and not directly into Echo360), you will see an institution login page, similar to the one you typically log into.

Otherwise, you will see the Echo360 login page.

  4. You are then redirected back to Universal Capture to create or control a capture.

After logging in, the browser tab with the redirect notice will remain open.

  3. Enter the requested username/email and password, and click SUBMIT.

To change your Institution

Classroom mode of Universal capture is tied to your Institution during the installation process.

  1. Uninstall the current version of Universal Capture: Classroom.
  2. Re-install Universal Capture: Classroom using the Institution ID of the desired Institution.

Personal mode of Universal Capture is tied to you Institution during the login process rather than during installation. Once a user logs in initially and selects their Institution, Personal mode remains tied to that Institution until those settings are cleared and any currently logged in user logs out.

  1. Launch Universal Capture.
  2. Click into the Universal Capture menu:
    • Echo360 Capture on a Mac.
    • Help on a Windows machine.
  3. Click Clear Institution Settings.

  4. Logout (if necessary).
  5. Log in using credentials from the desired Institution.

To log out

  1. Launch Universal Capture.
  2. Click your name to bring up your user details.

  3. Click LOGOUT.

Here are some general authentication workflows you should be aware of:

  • When using the Echo360 login page, logging into/out of the main Echo360 web application also logs you into/out of the desktop application. However, if you belong to multiple institutions it only logs you in for the institution you selected during login.
    • The “Alternate login” link on the Echo360 login page does not log you to the desktop application, it only logs you into the main Echo360 web application.
  • Logging into/out of the desktop application does not log you into/out of the main Echo360 web application.
  • When logging into the desktop app in Classroom mode with the Echo360 login page, you do not have to separately enter your email address, but the initial focus is on the password field instead of the email address field.
